How far have we come with homosexuality?

I think straight people need to step up their game ... in fact, I'd like to start a "straight-only" event for gay rights ... People (even the media) seem to marginalize or dismiss gay rights events that are attended primarily by gays/lesbians. It'd be difficult to marginalize a "straight only" event.

I liked this idea when I read it, really liked it. But then it could be seen as trying to distance ourselves from the gay movement. Like being embarrassed when someone thinks you are gay. "Lordy no, I just support their rights."

Really, we just need to be out there with the gay community, like the whites who were there in the sixties.

not at all.....i don't refer to men as 'girl'anything'.
men are men....only girls are girls.
those gays that do are more caricature than real.
only a very small minority of us are 'flamboyant', as you say.

And here I thought the whole point of freedom and equality was to let people be who they want to be without being nasty about it, even if they flame brighter than a thousand suns and call everybody from their grandpa down to inanimate objects "girlfriend". Variety's the spice of life....girlfriend!

Having grown up in the 80s in a homophobic small country town in the north west of western Australia I can attest that things at least in my part of the world have come a long way, but there is a lot further to go yet.

Being a quiet intellectual type in a place like that is not conducive to developing a confident sense of sexuality. I worked it out as I got older and essentially left that place for a more cosmopolitan metropolis, but even here in Perth we have a strong homophobic undercurrent to society.

So yeah, we've come a long way from the utter ostracism present even as late as the 70s and 80s but I wouldn't suggest that we have essentially dealt with the bigotry that is homophobia in modern Australian culture at least. Sure, we have a pride parade, and being a raging "death to the homos" type of loud bigot isn't really looked upon favourably anymore, but scratch the surface and you'll find a great deal of fear and hatred directed at homosexuals in even dense inner city populations here. Can't speak for the east of Australia but here in WA it's a quick path to shouted insults and even violence to openly show your sexual preferences for another of the same sex in the wrong suburbs/areas.

I live in hope though. Oh and just to be clear, I'm actually straight, but have often identified with the homosexual culture simply because of the anti intellectualism present here.

I just got banned from a hunting forum for argueing that homosexuality is not immoral. They were going on about a Reuters story that 19% of gay men in America have HIV. To them, that was proof that homosexuality is a perversion. I argued that promiscuity is the real problem, in both homosexuals and heterosexuals. I pointed out some statistics from the CDC showing that heterosexuals in the U.S. also get HIV. I actually had one guy post that the CDC is politically biased and you can't trust their data. I pointed out that the Reuters article got their data from the CDC. Then it turned to religion and the atheist got banned for "bashing christianity." If you're not with 'em, you're agin 'em.

your point?
i prefer to treat men as men.
am i expected to call thjem girlfriend?
i merely said that flamboyant gays were a minority.
is that a problem with you?

I don't know.

Four years ago, during my senior year, we had this guy who was a flaming homosexual. He wore pink, had pink hair, spoke with a lisp, and referred to himself as a 'bitch'. Kicking his ass was a popular sport that year. I don't know why, but we all hated him. We never gave him a chance. I remember punching him in the stomach and laughing as he fell down clinching his stomach. We were *********** monsters. I lay my head in shame....

Do not use alternate spelling to get around the auto-censor.

I recently heard a friend of my brother-in-law say that if he had a gay son he would "beat him straight." They are, of course, racist and homophobic rednecks but I think a lot of people think this way. (At least among racist, homophobic rednecks in the South.)

as a queer man in my mid 50's, i have seen a lot of change in my lifetime. things are a lot better than they used to be.

What's the most striking change to you?

What bothered you the most about how it used to be? What part of being unaccepted before bothered you the most?

when i was young, i could have been fired from my job or evicted from rental housing for being queer.
not to mention that i could have been jailed for having sex with a consenting adult.

Yikes RB!

If it's any consolation, I'm a vegetarian, but I don't think your hunting means you're "against me." :)

Hopefully we keep moving forwards, and not backwards.

It can be tough to tell a Nerf arrow from a curare tipped poison dart at any sort of distance.

I wouldn't assume nothin'. I'm married to a vegetarian. I know what they're capable of. :jaw-dropp

:p

Indeed, poison it is.

And, well, being honest, I do use it to hunt...but only man. He is, after all, the most dangerous animal.

Watch out in those woods RB. The hunter may become the hunted!

Muahahahaha

The whites were with the gay community in the sixties?

I meant the whites who supported blacks in the sixties, but I'm typing on a mobile device, so I was less clear than I should have been. I actually chuckled when I read your post. Thanks.

I have a real fear that I was a big enough jerk at some point in my life to have actually changed someone else's life. So, while I didn't do what you did, I understand the feeling. That you feel shame now is a sign of improvement for you at least.

As long as people giggle at fart jokes, homosexuality will be a subject of amusement. I don't think this represents progress or not as far as bigotry goes. I'd say homophobia is going out of style and becoming an object of shame more so than homosexuality outside of conservative Christian communities, and even there it has become accepted as a lifestyle in people younger than their middle ages and sixties.
