Would it be OK if someone exercised their freedom of speech and put a large picture of Mohamed right across the street from the proposed NYC mosque?

...yes. Why wouldn't it be? (Assuming all local by-laws were followed, etc)

um...i thought part of the argument was that the NEW mosque would be offensive.

how would putting up an offensive picture of Mohammed, make these guys look?

like true hypocrites.

Surely you're not trying to say that bigotry is ok if the other side are bigots as well, right?

Putting up a picture of Mohammad is now bigotry? If I was actually against the Mosque I think putting up an image of Mohammad across the street would make a good point. One side's feelings are hurt by a Muslim center being built and the other by a picture. Both are a freedom of speech which the other side generally finds offensive.

put it this way, if the anti-Mosquevites are willing to accept the new 13 story community center/mosque...as long as they can put up a big picture of Mohammed across the street?

sounds like a good deal to me.

put up your silly picture, and let the Muslims exercise their 1st Amendment rights.

You seem to be totally oblivious about what has happened in this world when Mohammad images were displayed.

Why is a picture of Mohammad offensive?

How about they paint a mural on the front of the Mosque. Freedom of speech and all that, right? This wouldn't offend anyone who supports the mosque, would it?
A nice mural like the one found in Iraq;

I think the example about Mohammad cartoons shows us an important point, when it comes to freedom of expression: Expect to be offended from time to time.

If we require Muslims to bear the offense of having the prophet on a caricature, we must ourselves be ready to bear being offended, by e.g. a mosque in a location where we would rather not have it.

Quite another matter is that we would probably be wise to avoid offending needlessly.

Whoosh

It wouldn't need to be offensive; I'm sure they could do it tastefully - you know, the right lighting, strategically placed throw-burkas. Stuff like that.

They could just use the photo of him standing over Sunni Liston. Nothing offensive about that.

What is Muhammad supposed to look like? We have all seen pictures of blonde Jesus and this seems to be the picture most people associate with Jesus. But how would anyone know if a picture of a general stereotypical muslim man was supposed to be Muhammad, unless he was named in the picture? Is there a description of Muhammad in the Koran that would make it obvious without a title on the picture?

Both of them were Semitic, weren't they? How about a picture of an appropriately ethnic looking dude in period dress, and whatever kind of visual clues would suggest both of them, with the caption, "Jesus ... or Muhammad?"

That would probably offend everyone who cares about that kind of stuff equally, and then they could join together protesting the insensitivity of ... well, whoever. At least they'd be doing it together.

That's one way to bring about mutual understanding.

When you start modifying your behavior because someone might be offended, where do you stop?
