Racists attack Mosque in NY

Well, it does if you are Humpty Dumpty.

"According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the term racial discrimination and ethnicity discrimination."

deal...with...it.

btw, until I guess after WW2, individual nationalities/ethnic groups, as we call them today, were often refered to as "races".

The Hebrew race.

The German race.

The Italian race.

etc etc.

Um, we were talking about anti-islam bigotry being racism. It is not.
Deal...with...it.

At about 11 p.m. on Monday, the teenagers in Carlton were at “some type of gathering,” Mr. Cardone said...

A kegger, no doubt.

They cornered the teenagers, who Mr. Huzair said were in two trucks, at the boat launch, holding them for 40 minutes until the police arrived.

That seems to be quite a long delay.

Why is there a semantic argument here? Why does it matter whether we call it "racism". Why not just call it bigotry? Everyone wins. No one loses.

racism is a convenient, generic term.

language evolves.

though, since Islam is a faith and can be held by anyone of any race, color, nationality, I see your point.

though, at the same time, hatred of Islam and hatred of Arabs is often inter-connected.

You are using 'black' as an example of racism to show that religious bigotry is racism. And you are also laying racism entirely on pale-skinned people: rather racist, I think.
If race is not the basis for the bigotry, it is not racism.
Explain to me how a religion is a race.
Are people who hate gays racist?
explain to me how black is a race....you appear fixated with the marker that racists use to identify their target groups....

Jews long ago got sick of this and coined the term anti-semitism so the "jews are not a race" people get one less pointless diversion to harp on.

The bigots lose. The mainstream bigots do not support the actions of these violent bigots, and it's bigoted for people blame anyone but the few individuals involved. This, of course, makes these people bigots as well, which means they are blaming themselves.

And if the people on this forum are bigots, isn't that an indictment of the JREF?

And if the JREF, a federally registered non-profit, is bigoted, isn't that blaming the United States Government?

You can do what you want to me...but I won't sit here...and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!

ethnic/racial/religious discrimination now all falls under the neat category of "racism".

It always has. It's just the Bigot's Brigade don't want to admit their racism so couch in terms of Islam being a religion not a race.

Whatever you want to call these teenagers, I'm going to call them ignoramuses. They not only did the wrong thing, but they picked the wrong target:
New York Times (from the link in the OP) said:
The obscenities episode occurred Monday and the shooting last Friday, both outside the World Sufi Foundation mosque in Carlton, N.Y., the authorities said.

C'mon, people (says I), the Sufis are the least of your problems! I think this demonstrates the level of ignorance among a lot of people about Islam and its subdivisions. This is like thinking that the Southern Baptists represent all Christians, and then attacking a U-U meetinghouse, or a United Church of Christ congregation.

It doesn't even need a confusion about churches. Headgear is apparently enough.

Sikhs are often attacked just because of their turbans, which their (not Islamic) faith requires them to wear. Since this ...

... obviously looks exactly like this ...

The most recent was just a couple of days ago.

Let's hear a big, flag-waving cheer for tolerance and freedom to worship.

Yes, I forgot Arafat's speeches in the world economic forum...

"If we take the number of Jews killed, and divide by it the aid given by the international community to my Swiss bank accounts..."

I had a Sunni Arab give me a lift and explain to me in detail, all the way, how horrible and nutty the Shi'ites are.

so sceptic are you going to condemn the action in the OP?

Jews long ago got sick of this and coined the term anti-semitism so the "jews are not a race" people get one less pointless diversion to harp on.

Ironically, the word wasn't coined by Jews but by anti-Semites themselves. Antisemitismus was originally meant to be a sophisticated and scholarly-sounding euphemism for the German word Judenhass, a means of legitimizing prejudice. It sort of back-fired.

"New charges for 5 accused of harassing NY mosque"

Under New York law, a hate crime is an enhancement of other designated charges, such as harassment. But Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone said members of the mosque "have predominantly said to me that they'd like to see us hold off on doing that."

"Until we get a clear understanding of what it is that motivated these young people and have a clear understanding from the members of the mosque how they want us to proceed with this, we're holding off on giving these crimes that designation," Cardone said.

The World Sufi Foundation mosque is the only Islamic place of worship in Orleans County, a predominantly rural county midway between Rochester and Buffalo with around 44,000 residents. It practices a form of Islam that emphasizes prayer, meditation and simple living.

One of the 100-member group's imams, Bilal Huzair, said mosque members would prefer "nothing extreme" to happen.

"This has to be a just punishment," he said outside court. "Upon looking at what had happened and after time has expired, we don't think the boys had any intent of making a hate crime. They were shouting anti-Muslim obscenities. However, it was a one-time deal."
