Perhaps the gospelers were writing the truth as they heard it. The birth and death of a Jesus like character could have happened centuries before, not necessarily several decades before. With the evidence at hand now, there's no way of knowing.
One thing is sure, Christianity did not become so widespread until Constatine's time in the third century, some 270 years after the supposed Jesus existed.
The problem with this is that the Gospels were written while Rome was still Pagan, and long before Constantine was Emperor. And we can be reasonably certain that they weren't written before the time Jesus was alleged to have been born.
And we also know that the points of comparison between Jesus and other Mythological figures (particularly Mithras, Mithra, Mitra and othe dying and reborn Sun Gods) are far too numerous to be coincidence.
So in a way, you are partially correct. The Gospelers were telling a tale that had been around for centuries if not millennia, but of a Mythological Archetype, not of any historical figures.
It's really hard to equate this though, with the notion that the NT authors were even "writing the 'truth' as they heard it".
