And this ain't just rumors...China's official newspapers are all abuzz today with reports about the Hangzhou airport being shut down after a UFO was spotted overhead. Lots of photos and videos, and its been confirmed that it was spotted on the airport's radar, too!

VISITORS FROM OUTER SPACE HAVE ARRIVED!! And, apparently, China's their number one tourism destination!

Or...perhaps not. The Chinese news reports also say that there is an unspecified "military connection" which will be explained later today.

But we all know the trooth! The aliens have arrived, and even at this moment are meeting with top Chinese gov't officials to plot the takeover of the world. Illuminati...beware!

I just asked a friend in Shanghai if she knows anything about this. She had no idea. Oh, and I think she now thinks I'm crazy.

Well, I saw a television report on it, and the link I gave above is to a Chinese newspaper...quite a few of the staff at my company have been talking about it today :) The Chinese gov't tends to be fairly open about reporting UFO sightings (there was a rather major one in Shanghai when I was living there in 1999), and China has one of the highest percentages of "UFO believers" anywhere. In fact, in the relative absence of religion, UFO or alien 'worship' has become a source of quite a few fringe cults here...a kind of atheist religion that provides a higher power, but nothing supernatural.

Anyone have links to more pics / video? The only video I have seen about this incident is very underwhelming.

Somebody better tell the aliens that their ship is on fire.

Hopefully it's just those aliens from "Signs" again. Any one of use could handle them. Predators would be a different story though

Hehe, and here's the original text from the picture:

A photo taken by a resident in Hangzhou shows an unidentified flying object hovering over Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, late Wednesday, July 7, 2010. [Photo/Metro Express]

My english skills might betray me, but doesn't "hovering" usually mean almost stationary floating? I wonder how this pic is supposed to show that :)

It was meant to read "Hoovering" Its what UFOs do when they are on a mass abduction mission. So I've heard.

The video lookedlike a comet, sorta. Dunno.

The picture looked morelike it was taken in a car, with one of the interior lights reflecting off of one of the inside of one of the windows.
I've seen a few fakes produced the same way and it looks simlar.

Please note...this was spotted on airport radar, and was taken seriously enough that the entire airport was shut down for a time. I doubt that a reflection off the inside of a car window would cause that.

The gov't has acknowledged that this was a legitimate event, that there was 'something' there. More than likely a misfired missile, or experimental aircraft, or something like that.

But "skepticism" about such things doesn't mean that as soon as someone says "UFO", you immediately start spouting reasons why the photos could be fake; you examine the info first, and determine the most rational, reasonable explanation.

In this case, a reflection off a car window really doesn't fit the evidence even slightly. (There were also many other photos, showing a similar object or phenomenon).

The official news reports state it was a UFO - it must be a hoax!

Wait! It's the Chinese official news agency - they're anti mainstream-media - it must be a UFO!

Wait! They're saying it has a military explanation! What's a concerned conspiracy theorist to do?

:)

I did a little snooping around the net, to see what chatter there was...several conspiracy theories already revolving around the idea that aliens are in cahoots with the evil Red Chinese, and the "military" link is cover for their nefarious activities.

In China, the reaction seems to be far more pragmatic, for the most part. Chinese airports are all under direct control of the military. Its been pointed out numerous times that had a real unidentified object been spotted, there would have been an immediate military response in anticipation of a possible attack.

Shutting off the airspace, but with no military response, makes it sound very, very much like something the military was already fully aware of...and not afraid. (Of course, if the aliens really are in cahoots with them...perhaps that explains it, too ;))

Just been reading a few reports about this (hampered by the fact that the Chinese are obviously trying to hide the truth by writing in Chinese) and it seems the response is "It was something to do with the military and let me assure you that you do not need and don't want to know anything else." :)

That's a long-exposure picture. As one can see from the double images of the buildings, the camera moved while the shutter was open. The image can easily be of an airplane flying with landing lights on (continuous yellow line); the individual lights at the top can be the blinking navigation lights. If this is true, I would guess the plane was flying from left to right. Heck, I can even see what seems to be the light cones from the landing lights illuminating clouds or some sort of suspension in the atmosphere (possibly smog) ahead of the plane.

Regarding the video, I can't understand a word of it. Between 19" and 25" there's footage what seems to be a beacon of light at night; no idea how it entered and left, no details. May be anything... An aircraft's landing lights, a car's headlights, a spot light, [add your guess here]. Between 1'39" and 1'45" there are images of what looks very like a contrail illuminated by the sun.

I love it :)

Let's ignore the most interesting parts of this story. An airport shut down. Confirmed radar contact. Gov't acknowledgment that something was there.

Let's instead overanalyze some poor photos, and 'debunk' the evidence that has the least to do with the overall story.

No, I don't think its aliens. I'm quite sure there's a rational explanation for it. But an airport wasn't shut down over an airliner; reflections in glass didn't create a radar image; and the gov't didn't acknowledge the event in the national media over someone's hallucinations.

Most likely a result of either an accident, or a test, related to some sort of military research or activity.

Radar often contacts things that aren't actually there, though. A radar contact doesn't necessarily mean anything one way or the other.

Also, I have seen 2 pics of airplanes related to this story, which will show up on radar, and a video of a light, which is probably also attached to an airplane.

Government officials are human beings who are also subject to being fooled and reacting.

I see no reason to suspect anything here but the connection of events that aren't really connected, plus the possible flight of a military aircraft near an airport.

This happens so often in Mexico that if the mexican airforce stopped flying when a UFO was spotted they'd never get off the ground. Some scientists say that the UFO phenomena is caused by tectonic activity such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions etc. I saw a perfect UFO go into and out of a volcano near mexico city and thats not extraterrestrial. The scientists call it plasma energy which looks like but is not an aircraft let alone a spaceship from another planet.

Of the 2 photos in the Chinadaily report, the first looks like a conventional aircraft contrail, but could equally well be a rocket trail. The second just looks like a long exposure of an airliner at night and is probably unconnected.

In the video in post #4, 20 seconds in looks like a rocket launch at night (reminds me of those "Norwegian spiral" pictures, but without the spiralling of course. :) )

Put that together and you get a rocket launch which required the temporary closure of airspace, either pre-planned or an emergency in response to a guidance failure. Just my guess, of course, but unless the Chinese authorities decide to say more, I guess we're done.
