Mel Gibson 's racist rant

On what planet is recording a death threat worse than making a death threat?

Seriously, are you folks out of your minds?

On planet Melgibson, where mad max battles braveheart with lethal weapons and the passion of christ in a post-apocalyptic gloaming heather in endless wars started by the jews; to secure the divine right for roving packs of ******* to rape ******* pigs in heat with sugar tits our gruff but loveable heroes are willing to sacrifice everything, even bravely burning down each other's houses, but only after fearlessly giving each other blow jobs. And if it weren't illegal to make a recording, he'd make an oscar-winning movie of it, too! :popcorn2

Yes, I've brought that up earlier too, and frankly I'm surprised that it's been glossed over so much in the thread.

I probably missed it, I skipped a few pages.

I see parallels between this issue and the thread on honor killings. Over there some people want to talk about weather honor killings are an integral part of Islam or not rather than just focus on what can be done to reduce the problem.

Mel Gibson's rant doesn't rise to that level of violence -yet-, but when someone is capable of making threats like like that it has to be taken seriously that someday he could carry them out.

Making those tapes public protects the woman. It also raises public awareness of the ugliness of domestic violence and racism as well as making it possible for any and all friends, family and the law to intervene before Gibson's temper reaches the point where he's acting out his threats.

About 81% of rape victims are white; 18% are black; 1% are of other races. (Violence against Women, Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Dept. of Justice, 1994.)
...

Doesn't seem to support your stats: on the face of it white women are underepresented as victims of rape

How does "81% of rape victims are white" negate what I stated, Fiona? In -99 the Bureau of Statistics estimated that 90-91% of rape victims were women. So, majority of rape victims are female, and California in particular had, in 2006, the highest rape-rates (three times as many as in New York).

You said:

you'd be at much higher risk being a white girl in such surroundings.

Bolding mine

Yes, I did. But how is that negated by the fact that, in general, most rape victims are white women? I do not understand how you could derive the information from any statistics that white women are underrepresented as victims of rape, when it's clearly the opposite.

I think "underrepresented" means on a per-capita basis. So if 81% of the victims are white, you want to find out what percentage of that population is white in order to learn how significant that 81% figure is.

Earth. Can you quote Mel's death threat?

The threat was to orally rape her then burn the house down.

You're right, that's not technically a death threat, but if someone were to carry out a threat of that kind of violence then I would consider death to be a very realistic outcome.

Surely you have a good idea of what that percentage is?
In Sweden we usually have a good ball-park estimate of US demographics given in high-school. Anyway, going by popular census figures, white people (not including hispanics) make up for about 65% of the US populus as it is. I'd guess about 50% are women, so 32,5% of the US are white females, and if 90% of rape victims are female, and 81% of rape victims are white (the figure probably fluctates depending on year, but let's assume it is somewhat concistent), then from a rough estimate we're looking at 69-71% of rape victims being white females. I.e around 2,18 times their overall represented figure, and while I don't know how people calculate elsewhere, clearly they are not "underrepresented".

Edit: This particular discussion is going off-topic, and while it is perfectly discussable, it's going to derail this thread I fear.

After skimming the first page of this thread, what disgusts me the most is the idea that you all feel so passionately about the personal problems of two people you don't even know. Here you are, judging them on issues you know absolutely nothing about.

I hate the whole idea of celebrity-ism and how they are held in such high esteem. It is disturbing to me that people get off on this stuff. Seriously, get lives.

But there is no such excuse in the situation Gibson was in.

Again:

"You will be raped" vs. "You will be raped by a Frenchman".

It does nothing to further enrage the other person - but it speaks volumes about what you think of French people.

How do we know it does nothing to further enrage the person?
I had a girlfriend in college who came originally from Bulgaria, and she would vocalize her fear of being raped or mugged by black people often, pretty much whenever we were in a black neighborhood. If Gibson's girlfriend had a similar paranoia, that is exactly the kind of thing he would know to say to really hurt her.
Would the above comment speak volumes about you, or about the person you are talking to, if you knew the person you were talking to frequently brought up their fear of being raped by a Frenchman?

Obviously Gibson has serious problems with minorities, but the armchair psychoanalyzing of this thread based on snippets of one half of a conversation are ridiculous.
I understand hating Mel Gibson since he's a complete ******, but claiming "You'll blow me" is a threat of rape? That's just dishonest.
I probably tell some friend of mine "blow me," or "**** you," or "**** me," multiple times a day. Better haul me off!
Obviously "**** you" means that I am specifically about to forcefully do so.

I think I heard a tear as you were reaching there.

You may want to see a doctor :D
