Female, left wing, unmarried, childless, agnostic leader

The polls have moved decisivly. In the absence of any major stuff up in the next few months, Gillard should win easily.

Watching channel 7 news. They have her quoted as saying she doesn't beleive in god and also the Libs\Nats ahead by 4.5 points. It is channel 7 so I take it with a grain of salt

As long as she is good at her job she has my vote

ETA - she has enough guts to say she doesn't believe in god so she is at least being honest and not playing politics with religion. I wonder if Tony Abbott will do try to make a point of her being an atheist

An August election looks odds on. Julia will still be in the honeymoon period.

And, yes Simon, I heard her say that she didn't believe in god. Very gutsy.

when she said she doesnt believe in god, she is an Atheist and not an agnostic, cool.

Probably correct, but I suspect she will describe herself as agnostic because of the baggage atheism carries.

She is not the first non-believer PM, with Bob Hawke being another.

She's definitely a nonbeliever. And she says she won't pretend in order to pander to religious voters. That should count positive to both religious and nonreligious voters, in my opinion. If you were religious, would you prefer an atheist to lie in order to mislead you into thinking that they were religious too? If I were religious, I'd think worse of someone who lied than I would about an out atheist. But I'm not, so I can't tell what the religious reactions are going to be. I can't imagine Pastor Danny and his lot being all that impressed.

But of course, we had to be trumped. By Iceland.

I'll probably vote for on that basis alone.

I have also met her (and have a photo to prove it) and she does seem a genuine, approachable person, unlike Rudd.

I'll vote for labour just because I don't ever want to see the mad monk as pm. And I actually was supportive enough of Howard to apply for young liberal membership, so that tells you how much I've changed!

I must say, the woman has strength and courage. Australia and New Zealand, I salute you!

I hope its not one of those "this will bring down your political career photos"...no whips or Leather?

She sounds bogan, more like it

You should hear the Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson, known universally by the press gallery as Marn Ferson, which is actually how he speaks.

Julia has now pissed off the gay lobby by announcing that she opposed gay marriage. The religious lobby is obviously now more important.

By the way, Sydney's 2UE is hardly the most balanced radio station in the world. If Gillard were a cross between Churchill, Franklin and Lincoln that station would still be finding major fault.

Much like American talkback radio really. I wonder what it is about the talkback radio format which seems to make it so the most successful voices are (seemingly) a long way to the right of the mainstream.

Sydney's like that, but Melbourne has been mercifully insulated from shock jocks until just recently. Thankfully MTR has only about 1% of the audience.

I seem to recall Adelaide and Perth talkback announcers saying things that would make even Alan Jones think "That's a little reactionary".
