McCarty's zealotry was far more harmful to the US than it was helpful. Ironically, McCarthy was in some ways more un-American than those he chased.

JFK's warmth for McCarthy was not as great as Bobby's, but he still felt enough of McCarthy to have performed a similar act three years earlier at the 100th Anniversary of the Harvard Spree Club dinner. Robert Armory, who had been at the dinner and who later worked in the Kennedy Administration recalled in an oral history at the JFK Library that when a speaker had likened McCarthy to the convicted Soviet spy Alger Hiss, JFK rose to his feet and declared "How dare you couple the name of a great American patriot with that of a traitor!" and walked out. The incident has never been denied by anyone who was there, and is accepted by JFK biographers Herbert Parmet, Thomas Reeves and Chris Matthews.

The problem with McCarthy is not that he was anti communist, but that he smeared a lot of people with the label for political purposes.
 
What I love about the Radical Rights defenses of McCarthy is they tend to try and use the Rosenbergs as their main proof it was all alright. A lot of them seem surprised that McCarthy had nothing to do with the apprehension of the Rosenbergs.

Bear in mind that we've got at least three live sightings on this thread of McCarthy apologists on the Right; two in the mainstream media and one live one participating in this thread. Who are you suggesting is a comparable Stalin apologist?

Was it ever a crime to be a Communist? (Please read the U.S. Constitution carefully. The crime of treason was well defined and strictly limited by intention.)

McCarthy's witchhunt, while exploiting patriotism, ran contrary to the very ideals that make our country great.
 
The right wing has been swinging this way for a while. Now, they have re-accepted the John Birch society as well.

From the late 1940s onward, the public perception of "communism" was aggressively broadened to include huge swaths of leftist politics: labor activism, desegregation, public education, and so forth. "Communist" was used similarly to how "linked to al-Qaeda" is today, except more recklessly.

So yes, in the parlance of the time, of course there were "communists" in the state department. Was it something to worry about? Not especially.

I've made it a general rule to re-evaluate any political position I hold which MaGZ agrees with. I certainly hope the defenders of McCarthy do the same.
 
Isn't it strange that there is a resurgence of McCarthyism happening, along with the John Birch Society being accepted? Has the GOP decided to adopt the crazy people, just to get their votes?
