Public Nudity acceptable or not?

Hi everyone,

I'm still new here so I believe I'm unable to post links.

I recently saw a video where a man was standing around in the nip and is approached by a couple of cops and told to re-robe, after he refuses the police begin to get physical and end up tasing (sp?... tasering???) the chap.

I have always considered a law demanding you wear cloths to be faintly ridiculous, so to see it enforced with such brutality was a little shocking, more surprising though were several of the comments under the video, which often expressed support for the actions taken by the police and denouncing the man as a trouble maker who had it coming.

I was wondering what the general feeling is on this board about the law against indecent exposure. Do you think it would be better to have no law (like Barcelona) or something like the Netherlands where it is allowed in certain areas and is really only considered indecent if someone complains. I would be especially interested to hear from anyone who likes the law the way it is (in the UK/USA).

Kind regards,

Sam

As I said I can't post links, If you want to find the video just type "naked man tasered" into google (I accept no responsibility for what you may end up watching) . The comments I referred to in my post were from boingboing.

I live in Scotland; what, realistically, are the chances of someone trying it for about 95% of the year? For the other 5% then it should be against the law except in certain private or semi-private places.

Come to think of it, the proportions would be 99% and 1%.

well imho, most people that do walk around naked should not be allowed to. :D

In general, I see no problem with people being naked in public if they choose. But, in terms of public health, I'd much prefer that the bus seat I sit on had some cloth between it and the last ass that sat in it. People being naked in public en masse, probably leads to disease spreading quicker; easier. But, surely some easing of the prudish laws in most places in in order.

Really? So would you want your 5 year old daughter to see a man bollock-naked in the middle of department store? Really?

At the beach on a hot summer's day? No problem.

Time Square on New Year's Eve? Maybe not a good idea.

What problem would you expect that to cause?

I'm guessing in Scotland the midge is nature's way of telling you to keep you your kegs on. That said if Charlotte Church or Konnie Huq were so inclined I would not be adverse to the full weight of science being employed on midge repellents.

This I would have no problem with. My kids, when they were five, certainly saw me naked at times.

What if he was aroused?

You can't allow nudity but arrest people for being aroused. They might not be able to control it, for a start.

Should he be allowed to touch it?

Gardening in the yard? Sure.
Driving? No problem
Taking the dog for a walk in the morning? Sure.

But, I don't want all that nakedness around me when I have breakfast at The Waffle House. I don't know where that fly has been!

If everyone walked around au starkaire, then what would all the strippers. porn stars, and nudie mag publishers do for a living?

For that matter, how could the Inernet be profitable if any time you wanted to see people without their clothes on, all you had to do was look out your window? I'm not talking about any hard-core stuff, just everybody participating in plain, ordinary, public nudity during their normal day.

Quick quiz: Hillary or Sarah? Biden or Cheney?

Agreed. The people who do tend to walk around naked are usually the last people you'd want to see au naturel

Do these responses genuinely imply your position as against public nudity? If so do you have a real reason to support this opinion? I assume you don't actually believe a law should be put in place just for your viewing pleasure.

Its a question of quality, not quantity. We can see people in clothes every day, but Vogue still has pretty good circulation. In a naked world, you 'd know the strippers because they'd wear trench coats everywhere and only be naked when & where paid to be that way.

Would that not imply that a law should be passed that requires you to wear a mask as this would drastically reduce the spread of the flu (I think, correct me if I am way off mark here but I am guessing that if not the flu then there are some diseases that are primarily spread through coughing and spluttering)

EDIT: I mean seasonally wear a mask... there is probably little justification for it all year round.

Fair's fair it was a bit flippant. I think if people really want to stroll around nekkid they should be allowed to do so.

Only in an ad absurdum kind of way. Its much less of a hardship on anyone to require at least some small version of pants in some circumstances than to require masks. Few of us eat, drink or breathe through our genitals.
