Where are all the artists?

Here are some puppets I've made

but i'm starting to feel like a weirdo (i have an art and science background and am a medical illustrator).

someone prove me wrong! i don't doubt that this is a false impression.

Congratulations. I admire your profession and the quality of your work is evident in your last post. Medical illustrations have been an integral part of the study of medicine from Vesalius* to Frank H. Netter and on to your generation.

*The illustrations in Vesalius' De Humanis Corpori Fabrica were not done by him, rather by one of Titians pupils.

so i'm somewhat new to all this, but i'm just wondering, are people in the arts kind of mutually exclusive to skepticism? or is it just that it draws more people who are in the sciences (and all you MAGICIANS heh) and those areas and those people tend to stay away from art? i mean i know there are musicians like george hrab and the guy who made the andrew wakefield comic, but i'm starting to feel like a weirdo (i have an art and science background and am a medical illustrator).

Well, I'm a freelance artist, and a skeptic, and I'm far more interested in art than skepticism.

I am very interested in mythology, fantasy, the pseudo sciences, etc as topics for art and fiction, even though I don't believe in the fantastic in real life. I find many skeptics are really into sci fi and fantasy, much more so than the average person.

Fun thread, and some good stuff on display. Here's one of mine, a sort of charicature of the Amazing himself I did for fun:

skepticjinx.png

The concept is a bit contrived: It's supposed to illustrate Randi doing the "skeptic jinx" that's been keeping spoons straight in the immediate vicinity of a certain mr. Geller for a while now.

Pencil, felt tip, notebook paper, and scanner. Think I showed it here before, as well.

ooh yay! i'm so glad this has become a gallery thread. here is an illustration i did mostly for fun and practice. more at the root website, which is kinda old (2007)...but you still might dig it...

I've always been interested in medical illustration when I first read through "Grey's Anatomy" in my teens. The small collection of Leonardo Di Vinci art books I own also hasn't hurt.

Other than all the anatomy/biology/illustration classes, how did you get into doing it?

Here are some puppets I've made

I'm jealous. I always wanted to become a puppeteer, but I just never had the gracefulness. I'm about as maneuverable as a cow with hemorrhoids.

I have BS and MS degrees, and am an artist in my free time. My job is very analytical--my small "on the side" business is artsy.

I am trying to think of all the artists in my group--only one has ever mentioned religion in any way, and that was Heaven. I don't see anyone wearing religious paraphernalia either.

I too am really interested in mythology as art subjects. I suppose that is because curious people have lots of interests....& we know the difference between pretend and real.;)

I posted my crap... you have to post yours.

I'm a bit odd.

I don't really get into the "real versus pretend" part of the art-thingy.
Or the sub-atomic realm-thingy.

Still,

I'm prone to the buzz of support groups and such.
But not proud about that.

Which is a sin.

Triple entendre, btw. Possible quadruple.

my Science Documentary/Educational scoring (done in the 90's) is here under 'Scoring' --these tend to be short, tinkly, cheerful parodies of different styles

I'm a skeptic and I'm very much into music - I don't find them mutually exclusive at all!

I'm not sure I would consider myself an artist, but I make music from time to time. Here's a not very serious project a friend and I work with when there's time: www.myspace.com/freudianslipswe

The last couple of months I've started something more serious with another friend, and we have some songs soon to be recorded, but nothing on tape yet.

Double Jameson Blues is especially good, it could easily be used in an indie movie.

I like how the percussion is way behind the beat in Kids in the Street--to me, it gives it a special laid-back feel.

These are just uploaded rather than being hosted on a third site, so they're small. if you click on them though, you can see them in more detail

Random militant pic in ink

Alice in Wonderland in watercolors:

Here's the first page (inked but without text) of a short comic story I'm working on. It's about a guardian angel who loses track of her teenage human when one of the Harry Potter book comes out...while she's absorbed reading the book and not paying attention, he ends up selling his soul for a girl, so she has to win it back. it's my first attempt at drawing something in comic book format. The story is pretty weak, but my focus is on the pics, not storyline

If it makes you feel any better, my ability to process visual stuff and draw it so poor that:

--I described a missing cat to the lady at the SPCA as 'green'--until she burst out laughing. (The only thing I remembered was the color of the cat's eyes)

--I once was asked to give a description of a perp to a sketch artist. We had to give up--I just couldn't do it.

I'm not insensitive to visual images, but I'm sort of 'eye blind'--I couldn't draw a sled, as they say.
