Why do illegal aliens want so much sympathy?

Sort of off topic, but in Australia we have had thousands of illegal immigrants arriving by boat at Christmas Island. Very few are shipped back. At the moment we are sending the message "come here the hard way, and you will almost certainly get to stay".

The U.S. has sent that message ever since Emma Lazarus' The New Colossus was inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty.

The New Colossus said:
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

How do they manage to stay in the US?

It is obvious that someone is employing them.

Yup, that is the case. Starting with agricultural workers but spreading out into other labor, those coming across the border can (and historically could) find employment in areas where the employers face competition in their production. Where the cheap labor achieves an in-road, then everyone in that field is then required to access the same cheap labor or be plowed under by the competition (sorry about all the agricultural metaphor). A laborer crossing into the US for a summer in the California or Texas farm fields can send a large part of their earnings back to home since they live very cheaply (the farmers provide very tacky room and board for nearly nothing), and pretty soon whole families come across, seeking some of that money. Children born on US soil by illegal parents are by law American citizens. The states, flooded with claims on social services (schools and medical), tap Uncle Sam to provide them. The only fix for it, it seems, is the painful one - make it not profitable to use illegals, but not only is this resisted by the employers, but by the illegals (and their legalized families and friends) as well. The only ones advocating for controls are people somewhat removed from the problem, who see a financial and theoretical employment drain.

Not a simple problem.

I have sympathy for anyone that lives in a country that offers little to no path for their citizens to overcome poverty. I do not however believe that such conditions are my responsibility to resolve.

The sort of people who declare them "criminals" are the sort of people they should have cheering them on.

You know how we say they should be kicked out and made to go to the back of the line? Well, for unskilled laborers with no relatives in the US, there basically is no line.

Bucking unjust laws was the cornerstone of America.

Are Americans clamoring for these jobs? Even with 10% unemployment?

This is one of the 1950's myths that is still clouding the issue. The idea that illegals only do jobs americans won't.

Illegals are most of the staff at even the 100 dollar a plate restaraunts in scottsdale. Americans won't do these jobs? MY former customers formerly held these jobs

Illegals are in every part of the construction trade. Please don't tell me americans wont be framers or painters. My former customers formerly held these jobs, and I worked for a framing company prior to operation gatekeeper. It was 8 dollars an hour and that bought me what I needed.

As much as I want to hate the employers for this, and I do, they're in a crappy position as well. If they DON'T hire illegals, their competition will, and they will smoke them for prices

The point I am trying to make is that illegal aliens and their supporters cry about how unfair it is to make these "nice people" obey the law of the countries they are illegally residing in. These people have no respect for the law. If I was to get in trouble in Japan or Thailand because I over-stayed my visa or entered the country without one when it is required, I would be called a fool who was stupid enough to take the risk.

Here is a hint to these jerks, obey the law, and then ask for help.

How would you feel about an American woman who went to Saudi Arabia and broke some dumb law about showing her hair or whatever? Would you think "What a lousy law", "what a lousy woman", or a little of both?

Where do you want to start? The poor? Drivers? Schoolchildren? Anyone in need of an emergency room? The taxpayers? Anyone with a legal identity? The environment? Our National Parks?

Do you really want to know or is this just another snipe?

Do you use the same standards of victimhood when it comes to the crimes of wall street, the energy company and the GOP?

Pipe and Rand.. is it your opinion that this girl leave the USA as soon as she had the means? Should she have run away from her parents at age 11, back to Mexico and try to fend for herself in that third world country?

Lousy law. She would be foolish to break the law unless she is trying to make a statement against the law. And even then, she runs the risk of losing something if she chooses this way to make a statement.

I know many people who came to this country as aliens; legally. The one thing they all have in common is that they obey the law. There is a procedure to gaining entrance to the United States and staying here. They did not think they were above the law like Jessica Colotl does.

She claims (as I recall), “I was trying to fulfill my dream of being a college graduate, I do not see how this I being a crime.” The crime that she seems hesitant to bring up is the one she broke when she failed to leave the country when she was able to. It matters not at all that she was brought to the USA as a child. As an adult, she has to be responsible for her actions. The only responsible action was to leave. She was free to apply for entry into the States later, but it seems she feels she is above the law.

I feel that naturalized citizens make great Americans. But those hypocrites like Ms. Colotl are exactly those types that are unworthy of being Americans or a naturalized citizen of any country.

She should have left the country when she became an adult. Instead she decided to remain illegally and break other laws as well. It seems her parents did a lousy job of raising her if she feels she can pick and choose what laws she will obey in the USA. I would disrespect her less if she was not trying to play the victim.

She didn't abandon her family the INSTANT she turned 18 to go off into a foreign country with (as far as we know) no money, no friends, and no support? Why does this crime-committing, illegal, lawbreaking criminal (who, need I remind you, breaks laws and commits crimes!) want sympathy!?

What evidence do you have that she had “no money, no friends, and no support?" Maybe this woman just finds it a mere inconvenience to leave the USA. She is allowed to live in the USA, as long as she finds a way to do it legally.

She chose to break the law and is now all weepy because she got caught and is not getting a pat on the back by the authorities for her lawlessness. I suspect (but can not prove) she wants sympathy because she was used to behaving any way she wanted irregardless of the law and now finds it more inconvenient to continue to do so.

From your link, ""If I were to be deported, I'd have to start all over again," she said. "

She is allowed to live in the USA, as long as she finds a way to do it legally.

And how is that?

She was eleven when she came here. That wasn't her freaking choice. I don't care what your position on illegals is, an eleven year old doesn't make that choice. She's twenty-one now, presumably with no ties or resources in Mexico. Yet you assume, based entirely on her being an illegal immigrant, that she is 'used to behaving any way she wanted irregardless (not a word) of the law'. Yes, this college student is SO the lawless rebel.

To be clear though, she needed to be arrested for being a dangerous illegal that endanger the lives of others; operating a motor vehicle with a license.

Do consumers benefit from cheaper prices?

English farmers have the same problem, despite unemployment, most Englsh won't work in the fields.

Right now it is mostly Poles who are doing this sort of work.

That Mexican is just too lazy to abandon everything and everyone she's ever known and move into a foreign country with no money, no friends, and no support.

What do you base that suspicion on?
