The Official UK Election Thread! 6th May it is!

I've been a diehard liberal/SDP/LibDem voter since 1981.

My exfather-in-law worked down t'pit and I live in Derbyshire (used to live in West and South Yorks). I know what the Tories are capable of, and it fills me with dread. Thatcher ripped the heart out of our manufacturing base and danced gleefully on the remains, and now here we go again.

She's ga-ga. Let it go.

Rolfe.

So because she's lost her marbles I should forget what she and her cronies did? No. Why should I? Lots of them are still active members of the party and there's a resurgence movement of Thatcherism within the party.

They can hardly close the pits again and what's left of manufacturing is for the most part set up in ways even thatcher would approve of. I doubt either of those areas have any more to worry about under the tories than under labour. Zee banking sector on ther other hand there we may have a problem.

Did anybidy say anything about forgetting it?

That comment about pissing on a demented old woman turned my stomach though.

Germany, Poland ?

In addition, according to Wikipedia (and stretching the definition of both Western and civilized in different ways);

Countries with large ship building industries include South Korea, Australia, Japan,..., Germany, Turkey, Poland and Croatia.

I'm not entirely sure the likes of Japan, Germany and Oz are known for their low wage economies (which was one excuse amongst many). And in terms of steel production again, Japan, the US and Germany are in the top 10 together with Italy. Strange, how and why these nations managed to keep hold of these industries to the present day, and yet they were apparently completely inviable in the UK. Ah well, at least we've got the square mile.

Ok, I'm not sure if you quite grasped what I meant to say AND failed to notice what words I used, or if you're just being obtuse, but I'll go for option 1 and assume you aren't intentionally painting me as a horrible person.

I said that I "wouldn't urinate on her if she was on fire". This is a very common, if crude way of stating that I wouldn't lift a finger to help her out in any situation.

The hypothetical presented was that I wouldn't urinate on her, something which she wouldn't find pleasant in normal circumstances, and thus something which I would, in theory, not mind doing (even though the thought of urinating on her turns my stomach too). Thus, the fact that I would not do something unpleasant to her to save her life (her being on fire) shows that I really hate her.

Of course, I'm sure you're aware of that, but on top of that, if you assume for a moment I was being literal, I still wasn't talking about actually urinating on her because I said I would not do that.

I know all that. I simply found it a crude and unnecessary way to talk about an old woman who is so demented she doesn't know what day it is or even where she is.

I can't articulate my actual feelings about the woman, so yes, it's crude, but honestly, when she dies they should turn her grave into a dancefloor.

I'm stunned that some people actually feel she was a good PM, which if I'm honest influences my anger with regard to her quite a bit. It's not enough that she ruined the country and destroyed entire families, hell, entire TOWNS, but that some people LIKED that? They want to emulate her?

It disgusts me.

Yes, yes, entirely so. However, that was more than 20 years ago. The woman is away with the fairies. Such hatred is unhealthy. Let go the personalisation of it.

Again, it's not so much the woman herself as the fact that she's idolised. I don't care that it was more than 20 years ago, there are still areas that are desolate and jobless with little to no future prospects, that woman is, for want of a better word, evil.

Doesn't matter if she doesn't know what time of day it is, it's still the same woman, and she was unapologetic and so were her minions.

Sorry that:

Making the country answerable to parliament and not the unions,
Defending the UK,
Ceasing to prop up failing industries,
Restoring the UK's economic ability to compete internationaly
etc etc

Made you cry.

Best post war PM. By a mile.

All of which could have been done WITHOUT the revelling in greed that went with it. WITHOUT the tragic human cost in dignity, caring and empathy that went with it.

Oh and by the way.....

Parliament should be answerable to us not the other way around.

Best PM since the war? That woman and her "Everyone for themselves" attitude were plain evil.

She may be a mindless crone, I won't forgive what she did.
