Uncle Rush is at the Oxycontin again and letting us all know his opinion on the recent debacle over the oil spill.

So, since they're sending S.W.A.T. teams down there...since they're sending SWAT teams down there to inspect the other rigs! What better way to head-off more oil drilling, nuclear plants, then by blowing up a rig. I'm just...I'm just noting the timing here.

So I suppose the thinking of ole' Rush on this one goes something like this.

Environmentalists want to help the environment by preventing oil drilling and nuclear power plants.

So they blow up a series of oil rigs to make us think twice about more drilling and nuclear power plants...adversely affecting the environment in the process.

????

In his defense (I know, I know, stupid), I'm pretty sure environmental wackos like ALF and ELF have done crazy, insanely shortsighted crap like that before - though not on that level.

-Rescuing lab animals and setting them free in an environment where they'll just die anyways.

-Blowing up an car dealership in "protest" over SUV pollution.

Though I don't think they have any sort of plan beyond "down with The Man!".

True enough. But uhhh...blowing up an oil rig to protest the environmental effects of burning oil? They've gone from well-intentioned, but stupid, extremists to the level of counter-productive villainy not seen since the days of Boris Badenov.

ETA: Limbaugh also has his conspiracy blinders on. Aside the point that some of these folks may just be that stupid, we're also talking about a group that stupid pulling something like this off on an operational and populated oil rig.

There's also the issue about the "S.W.A.T team" investigating other rigs for bombs. Aside from the obvious one, S.W.A.T. doesn't investigate bomb threats, I believe it's standard procedure to investigate oil rigs for defects or sabotage when a nearby rig goes down regardless of whether they expect it or not. Not 100% sure if that's true, repeating a claim told to me, but it'd make some sense.

Accusing ELF of doing it is one thing (and if they had they would probably admit it), but saying the government is behind it takes it to conspiracy loon territory.
 
I don't think either group did it, to be honest. I'd be shocked and disturbingly impressed if ELF pulled this off with the resources available to them. They aren't exactly Al Qaeda, especially when it comes to their training and funding.
 
Rush was providing insightful and provocative commentary alerting inquisitive minds about the possible relationship between the disaster and political motives of the liberal socialist block running the country.

Or, if you find his words offensive, then he was joking, you know kidding, ribbing those over sensitive liberals knowing they will twist his words 9 ways from Sunday to make him look bad.

He said "maybe..." when joking about the eruptions in a very specific tounge-in-cheek way. He is banking on the fact that no liberal will do some digging and actually listen to the actual broadcast and get their necks bent out of shape over nothing. He is right. He knows you better than you know yourself. Your ideology blinds you.

No, I really think he was being completely honest here. Right on cue though, his defenders have popped up claiming it was all just a joke.

The SWAT claim is kinda interesting. I don't know much about SWAT but this doesn't seem like something they'd be sent to do. They seem like a group who worries more about hostage rescue and counter-terrorism than bomb disposal. For that matter, isn't SWAT under the domain of local law enforcement? The SWAT claim sounds like more of a gaff on the part of the president, to be honest.

I think it's dishonest to try to write off any crazy thing a radio show host says as a joke. But I think it's fair to write it off as a crazy thing to keep the show going (no dead air), I couldn't do it.

I can see how the bolded situations apply to Oil Rigs. An oil rig presents an extra level of danger and I can see how training in special weapons and tactics could be seen as beneficial for police work involving oil rigs.

Limbaugh himself is a joke, but he's trying to have it both ways on this sort of stuff. Like Glenn Beck, he'll say these loony things, and if some nut out there acts on it and causes problems, his response will be, "Geez, I was just kidding!"

Leave it to media and attention whores like Limbaugh & Beck to say the most stupid things to get some face time. It's how they make money.
 
Uhm.. even if it was a domestic terrorist group that blew it up, does it change the fact that BP cut corners and safety measure to maximize profits?
 
If a terrorist group blew it up, and as far as I'm aware there's no evidence supporting this view, then it's a crime against property, capitalism and the American way of life. They should be publicly executed.

If BP "cut corners" in pursuit of ever higher profits, losing their rig and paid labor to death and destruction, then rest assured the free market will punish them. The last thing we want or need is more government involvement. The government probably caused this mess in the first place!
 
I totally disagree. This disaster shows that there needs to be more government regulation concerning these off-shore drilling operations. If there were regulations, this may very well have never happened. The whole "market will punish them" doesn't even make sense. Has that philosophy ever actually worked?
