Archie Comics to Feature First Gay Character

That's Archie for ya, announcing proudly that they are a mere 25 years behind.

And probably years ahead of numerous other comics. I'll take what I can get. I have no idea what their demographics are, but I'm gonna reckon their readership is from, like 8 to 80 years old. If they get third and fourth graders discussing gay characters openly, it's a good thing.

(I'm hoping they don't turn this into a Doris Day/Rock Hudson movie and cop out that he's really straight but used the gay ruse to avoid hurting Veronica's feelings or as a come on so that she'd try harder.)

I would have bet on Moose or Reggie (overcompensating), or Jughead...

In fact, I reckon the lot of them go to Brokeback Mountain for their camping trips!

Maybe it's another indicator of the trend of increasing acceptance. 5, 10, 20 years ago, would the school that had the fake prom drawn such world-wide scorn? Or a singer come out and no-ones cares (or surprised for that matter). My daughter (7) is growing up in house where every adult she meets couldn't care less about partner gender and when she saw two girls kissing on prime time, mainstream tv said "oh, they must be lebians" (no, I didn't mispell - that's what she said) and forgot about it 2 seconds later.

If this is serious and not a publicity seeking gimmick - then good on them.

This is diabolical.

I haven't seen an Archie comic for 40 years or so, but as I recall, Veronica was very hot, and very hard to get. For her to finally let it out, on a gay guy, is such a waste.

I thought Jughead was gay. He had no use for the myriad babes in the comic.
But then, the entire comic was pretty damn gay, so , hard to say.

not really. Marvel has nearly 50 characters that have been openly gay, bisexual and lesbians in their comics over the years:

It all started with Northstar

Even DC had many gay characters, including Robin in Frank Miller’s “Dark Knight Returns” series, his sequel to the seminal “Dark Knight” series. He was the "villain" in the series, revealing his intentions because of his unrequited love for Batman

Archie comics, way behind the times.

Banky: Archie, alright! Archie and the Riverdale gang were a pure and fun-lovin' bunch. You can't find dysfunction in those comics, because they were just flat out wholesome.
Hooper: Archie and Jughead were lovers.
Banky: Shut the **** up.

Rule 10

Hooper: It's true. Archie was the b*tch and Jughead was the butch - that's why Jughead wears that crown-looking hat all the time: he the king of queen Archie's world.
Banky: Man, I feel a hate-crime coming on
Holden: He's got a point. Archie never did settle on Betty or Veronica.
Banky: Because he wanted them both at the same time, you ********!

Rule 10
He never chose one because he was trying to get both of them into a three-way!
Hooper: (pulls out a dollar and hands it to Banky) Here. I want you to go down to the corner store and buy yourself a clue. Go on.
Banky: Eat it. Urkel.
Hooper: I told you to watch it with that Urkel ****.

Face it, girl - Archie's a sister.

Yeah, and Fritz the Cat and Captain P***gums and The Furry Freak Brothers!

Comparing Archie to Marvel (or DC) is like comparing Family Circus to Doonesbury. Richie Rich or Baby Huey or Scrooge McDuck would be more apt comparisons. And that's sort of the point I was making. For something as innocuous and non-current as Archie,... this is a pretty big step.

I remember Marvel Comics introducing a Rasta character back when Bob Marley was popular in the States. The said character was fond of the epithet ''Bloodclaat!'' until it was pointed out that a bloodclaat is a sanitary towel.

To the bat pole!

I have not looked at a Archie Comic for years, except for the Punisher cross over, which was great.

I'm disappointed. I was hoping Betty and Veronica were going to come out as lesbians.

I guess I'm the only person who finds this,... what do I want to say?... surprising? (probably) Shocking?(no certainly not - that connotes some sort of morality play, I think).

I liken my reaction to when I was in Taipei and the whole Monica Lewinsky thing came out. Shortening my timelines and remembering that the morality police drove Gary Hart out of a campaign because he had a bimbo sitting in his lap, I would've bet my firstborn(although I'm sure she wouldn't have appreciated it) that Clinton was going to be run out of town on a rail. When the general hubub turned into, "Hey, so he was sticking a cigar up some dimwit's butt in the oval office, he's been a good prez!", I was astonished.
Of a sudden, America seemed to have grown up. It was almost like reading about Italian politics not US.

I guess I expect the worst of my country, sometimes. And often they don't let me down, e.g. that disgusting and current Adventure of The Lesbian And The Mississippi Prom. But I'd just never see their readership as ever accepting someone gay even existing in Riverdale, much less featuring in an issue.

Carry on. Just me, musing on a Saturday morning.
