I filled out the Census! Did you?

They aren't spending my money. Until Obama buys a stake... :D

I guess if you don't understand that advertising is investment rather than just spending, I can't make you.

I'm spent countering your arguments from ignorance, do your own research.

I run a small factory. I started working on the shop floor and am now the general manager and have been for 10 years now.

I understand perfectly well what advertising is.

I just don't consider 2 million fortune cookies a wise use of my tax dollars.

Coca Cola does not use my tax dollars. They can buy all the fortune cookie ads they want. It's their money and their stockholders.

I did say "one of the duties of a democracy" for a reason.

But since you brought it up; How does one ensure equal representation in congress for all "races" without demographic information?

What an odd question. One doesn't. One shouldn't try.

'Race' is an outdated concept without scientific foundation.

Jesus some of you are childish...

HAHA I made a funny in the race section! I showed The Man!

It almost seems like as soon as anything government-related registers in someone's brain, 75% of their cortex shuts down and their maturity drops 20 years.

I just got a great idea. Next time someone asks me for my race, I'll write "New York City Marathon".

:D

Not for something as serious as the census but for a survey or poll or something, why not...

Yep. It's like the people who didn't list their phone number because - GASP!!! - someone mighty actually call them!

The Census Bureau says this data is based on self-identification. I self identify as "human". You may think being human is childish; I do not. If I "showed the man," I did it the same way Rosa Parks "showed the man," by registering my belief that people should not be treated (or counted) differently because of an outdated social convention.

In fact, I see people like you as being government Glindas, asking "Are you a good racist, or a bad racist?"

My phone number was on the form. So far, no calls from "the man" harumphing about the erosion (or is it the expansion?) of pigeonholes.

So you're _against_ having a congress which is demographically representative of the country?

registering my belief that people should not be treated (or counted) differently because of an outdated social convention.

Which is the perfect way to ensure minorities (of "race," religion, sexual orientation, wealth or whatever) are under-represented in a representative democracy.

It's basic game/election theory; Consider this thought-experiment; There is a country called Electoria whose voting population is 51% Purple-party and 49% Orange-party, evenly spread across 100 states. Each state elects one representative to Electoria's governing council.

What's the makeup of the council after the election?

100 Purple-party members. Which means 49% of the population is completely unrepresented and has zero say in their government. So much for "one person, one vote." (This kind of result can be generalized to three or more parties and nontrivial population densities)

Using "racial" demographics as a part of creating voting districts is one attempt at a solution to a voting system that tends to devalue minority voters. There _is_ an implicit assumption that people of the same "race" share similar culture, values and opinions on their government.

Is it a reasonable assumption? To a point.

Is it an outdated assumption? Increasingly yes.

When and how should it be changed? Now those are interesting topics for debate. Open a new thread if you wish, but better study up on game theory first.

I find it amazing how thorough the census is this time.

We must have received different census forms. I was amazed at how simple it was. I imagined the United States Census to have me provide them with more information than, "a white guy lives at this address."

If that's all the information the Census Bureau needs, they could have saved millions of dollars by just having the local DMV send them an email.

Workers must make up to six attempts to reach the person at their home.

...they could save millions more by cutting that arbitrary number in half. If the people don't answer on 3 occasions, they won't in 6.

I just found the whole census experience to be rather unorganized and wasteful.

Also, it seems weird to me that people who aren't white are required to specify their lineage damn near to their country of origin, whereas if your skin happens to lack melanin, it doesn't matter if your ancestry is from New Zealand, Iceland, South Africa, Pakistan, or Pittsburgh. You are white.

It happened.

If it did happen, that wasn't the Census Bureau, dude. That was probably just Steve Martin and Michael Caine trying to get your money.

Also, if you get an email from a Nigerian princess asking for your account number -- she's not a Nigerian princess... just FYI.
