Some people apparently can't be bothered to explain their reasoning. I, for one, have no interest in agreeing to disagree with someone who simply reasserts their position without explaining it.
I dunno, it's REALLY hard to explain "I think it's interesting enough that it warrants a second test even though the first was failed" (/sarcasm)
(Also, IIRC, Jeff's approach is far more tolerant than yours, which does lead to near endless testing. Although, from what I hear the podcast didn't do a great job of explaining this.)
What an incredibly useless argument. I don't believe I or anyone else has argued that simply because we believe something to be true makes it true. I, for one, have provided several reasons for my contention, none of which were "Because I said so." I know you've only posted in GS&P 23 times in three years, but you need to know that the expectations are a bit higher here when it comes to refuting arguments.
Ooh, insults. And while you may have done so I don't recall seeing them at all. Except saying that it was a common public perception. If you can link me to it (or even just give a post number) I'll consider the points and retract the entire 'no proof thing' (ETA: fixed to be more clearer.)
As for what I "want" something to be, that seems to be making the argument personal because my desires are irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
By "want" I mean I'm seeing that argument repeated as a way to .. I don't know if attack is the best word.. but you get my drift.
Where? What are you referring to?
I'm refering to the general thread (To the point where I actually think I'm afraid to venture an opinion on the actual subject instead of meta commenting on some of the threads. Although, I guess I should..)
UY did address this, sorta (see above)
Tangential to what? Did you intend to quote something in this post? It would have helped, believe me.
Tangential to my actual post. Although, honestly, I don't post much in GS&P because I can rarely make a non tangental post. And I don't want to be told to take it to Tangency...[/ref]
Excellent! A subject, albeit a poorly worded one. "Rational Alchemy post" is referring, I guess, to the podcast? You do know what this thread is about, don't you?
Yes, yes it is. My apologies, I was in a rush when I left and I often confuse post for podcast. I'm trying to break the habit but I couldn't really proofread.
I agree that saying something is a certain way doesn't make it so. You must obviously agree that saying things aren't a certain way is just as effective.
Er? Can you elaborate? I *think* you mean that (for an example) "Candidate Y is not a good Christian" is pretty effective in saying that "Candidate Y is evil."
Given this apparent impasse, we sometimes have to rely on other sources.
Which of your sources tell you that the JREF's credibilty has not been damaged?
When you post your list of sources, I'll respond with mine.
Most of the people I talk to already
a) have no clue what the JREF are
b) think the JREF is full of trolls*
c) dislike miltant atheism
*I've had Randi described as a troll with good motives, but still a troll. I've actually stopped discussing skepticism with him for other reasons but.
While I'm sure it may carry weight in the woo community (..how?) I tend to not really see how the JREF's name is dragged about. Now, again, I've not seen any but VFF claim this as a victory but she would anyway so...
(Also, I don't really think that people are incapable of separating roles, although I cheerfully admit I'm being optimistic. I mean, I can think of two examples where a lot of people DON'T do it.)
I'm fairly sure you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone here who wants the perception that the JREF is woo-friendly to become widely held. Why do you think so many of us object to the way in which events have unfolded?
That's.. not precisely what I meant. Let me be clear. I'm saying you want the argument to be true because it largely invalidates Jeff's argument somehow.
