Here's an interesting hypothesis and one that I'm not even sure is all that out there
-> Under Bush & Cheney, there were a lot of things they were planning to do, stuff even more unethical and ugly than the stuff they actually did (Patriot II Act, potential plans for a staged terror attack), but often couldn't because occasionally damaging stuff leaked out, sometimes through truthers, various conspiracy theorists and dissidents
-> Since dissidents, truthers, conspiracy theorists have a tendency of exposing some of the most ugly plans the government/elites/whatever plan to do, Obama is now going after all of them by labling them threat to national security, whether they are violent or not. Since many were unhappy with the fact that Obama hasn't really done anything of use that generated a lot of anger when they were expecting true change, then Obama goaded them into increasingly outrageous acts.
-With Healthcare, someone connected to Rahm Emmanuel was the first person to make a comment about potential death panels. Conservatives are often outspoken types and often are pretty easy to goad into getting all lathered up, and circulating a rumor to them that the government might pull the plug on grandma is a surefire way to get them all fired up. After that you just let them do the rest (and Obama released a DHS report in 2009 shortly after getting into office labling conservatives as being a national security threat and lumping them in with right-wing militants and white supremacists -- or more accurately the first draft did, while the second draft eliminated the comment about conservatives but most likely DHS operated under that premise -- regardless the conservatieves read this and reacted. Basically Obama outlined the premise and let them conclude his premise).
-Obama's administration has been particularly focused on gaining control over the media and with that he could ensure that any crazy action carried out by anybody he or his administration don't like would immediately make the news and be used to point out an increasing threat from Tea-baggers, Truthers, CT-ists of various stripes, and dissidents.
-It's even possible that he has been actually goading the opposition through the media outlets themselves. For example many people have suspected Glenn Beck to be an agent provocateur, and he has done quite a job of whipping up certain right-wing groups into engaging in erratic behavior. Additionally, just recently the media have started talking about Tim McVeigh and wondering if his actions could shed light into the actions of certain dissidents. Of course this will be interpreted as saying that some dissidents are basically domestic terrorists like Tim McVeigh, and that's going to anger them too. Who wouldn't be angered by being compared to a guy who blew up a building and killed 168 men, women, and children?
