the only black boxes which were destroyed, had 2 110 story buildings collapse on top of them (a first in aviation history) and were in a pile with fires burning at over 600C for 100 days. Gee... maybe they weren't designed to withstand that.

Of course as a brit you must have seen the episode of brainiac where they put a black box into a car crusher and crushed it...
