What Happens After I Die?

.
Reality sucks. That's why we have beer, books, movies, Interwebz, pron, religion, RPGs, video games and weed.

:D
I've seen Jersey Shore and the Roast of Flava Flav and so I have evidence this is possibly correct ...

What happens after we die, the same thing that happened for the 13.7 billions years before that. No paying of taxes before we are alive and none after we die.

Paul

:) :)

Somehow I suspect that our government could figure a way to make you pay back taxes for the past 13.7 billion years. I hate accountants. :vampire:

Seriously though, If you think we go through all this Joy & Pain with everything else in between and just cease to exist, that's pretty boring isn't it? Not much reason to why you were born, to death, to the air we breathe, to the reason why there is so much space out there, everything..

The mere fact that you think it would be less boring if there were a reason doesn't mean that there's a reason. I think my life would be more interesting if Tom Wopat was my mailman and he stopped by every day to talk about Dukes of Hazard. But that doesn't mean that Tom Wopat is my mailman. And it doesn't mean that I'd be better off pretending Tom Wopat was my mailman. In fact, I imagine my actual mailman would be more than a little freaked out if I cornered him and started talking about driving the General Lee every day.

Unless you were bitten by a zombie. Then you would reanimate and mysteriously seek out living humans upon which to feast!

(Sorry, couldn't help myself. Just finished reading "The Zombie Survival Guide" - what a hoot)

That's just a myth. But if you have your brain cryogenically frozen you can be revived once medical technology advances a whole bunch. Just ask Ted Williams. (Once he wakes up).

This is where the non-believer will tell you that they "do not need to believe in sky fairies and the afterlife to enjoy life and find meaning in it."

I think you are assuming that everyone must feel like you, and have to find a justification for being alive in order to go through the pain and find meaning in the pleasure everyday. This is definitely a philosophical quandry I think many people go through ... but I can tell you that at one point, I thought exactly this same way. So the belief in an afterlife and god "having a purpose" for me became a reality which I lived by and used.

But eventually, I saw I was hiding behind those things as an excuse to not experience the reality that was here and just take it at face value. Life is pleasure and pain and lots of other stuff. Finding meaning in it is rewarding and wonderful. But HAVING to have a meaning behind it can drive one to living on crutches when you can probably walk just fine without them. You can accept responsibility for the pain you cause and forgive others for the pain they inflict on you without having to justify them or yourself. It's just life. God doesn't have to arbritrate everything. Also, you can enjoy pleasure and love others and even sacrifice yourself for others and causes without feeling guilty or afraid and having to reasons to feel those things or not feel them. Regardless of what you believe, you will die one day as will all of us. That will be the culmination of the point. What happens after that doesn't have to determine how you live now.

And here is a thought ... if there is a god, would he eventually want you to make your own reality or always be enslaved or looking to a version of his or someone elses?

Far from it, i still enjoy and have pleasure with the pain as anyone else would if they didn't believe in the afterlife. In saying that i do things that feel right, always have since a kid. If you feel like seeking out pleasure that is against the commandments and know it's wrong you probably don't want to believe in an afterlife so deny it cause you know what happens to you in the afterlife.

Not everyone "knows" they are wrong in the sense that you mean. I know many believe going against the commandments are wrong. I even agree with a few of them. Murder, theft, sleeping around in a closed relationship. I do not "know" that worshipping another "God before me" is wrong in the sense that you do. I know of it, but it is not wrong as far as my knowledge is concerned.[/quote]

The ignorant hate knowledge.
Denialists hate reality.

See? I can play that game too. ;)

I don't even like shellfish.

No, we don't know what happens to us in the afterlife. We don't believe there even is an afterlife.

We don't believe in sin either.

I'll kill you for saying that! Then sleep with your wife! And steal your belongings. I won't respect my parents calls for me to stop and I'll blame it on my neighbours because I want their stuff. I'll do this today, a Saturday, the Sabbath, which I call Saturday in honour of the pantheon of Greco-Roman gods.

And I'll enjoy doing it.

There is no death for me. Others may die but I won't.
The only way for me to experience existence is through... experience, through the thought process. When there is no thoughts there is nothing. Thought is only possible by physical electro-chemical processes in the brain.
When these processes end, "I" end, so it's impossible to experience death.
So there is no death.

I was once anesthetized (spelling?). I heard the doctor say something about possible tingeling in my arm, then i woke up. Two hours had passed. There was no gap, no "blackness", no nothing, not even a falling into unconciousness and no memories, no traces of memory.

My experience, and the same with others I've talked to about anesthesia.
A more total lack of awareness than anything I (or they) have experienced.
Death can't be different.

So, truthiness in other words. If it feels right, it must be right and therefore true or good enough regardless of the consequences.

ETA: The main problem I've experienced with "truthiness" peeps isn't their beliefs, necessarily, rather they have a tendency to not take responsibility for their actions when i suffer the consequences for their choices. In other words, you might do what feels right and it hurts me or I suffer somehow because of it, and even though you might be "sorry" ... you keep doing what feels right anyway. And of course pointing this out is fruitless, because the response is, of course, "I do accept responsibility for my actions, I'm just not perfect," etc etc etc.

There's a name for that each of those, depending on whether you mean you have pleasure inflicting the pain, or pleasure receiving the pain...
.
Corrected...
Sadist... "Hurt me, hurt me, please! Oh please!"
Masochist..."No! Bwwwwaaahaaa!"

And it's good for both! :covereyes

Actually your correction is incorrect.;)
And haven't you got your masochist and sadist confused? (Although both are probably pretty confused anyway)

The mind, what a marvelous thing to waste.
Yup, the M guys and the S guys should be reversed.
But they'd like it either way, I'm sure. :)
