My professor is a kook!

It's nutbars like this woman who give higher-ed academia a bad name. As an adjunct college professor myself, this kind of garbage pisses me off to no end

I looked her up on RateMyProfessors. com.

I found a listing for her when she taught some years ago at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in her original field, anthropology.

All her students sing her praises:

"Horrible teacher. Made you stay 20 minutes after class. Boring, didn't cover anything in bookou didn't pass the tests. Talked about personal things not anthropology. She messed up my A average."

"Disappointing class because of the teacher. She would always run 20 minutes late after class was dismissed. I love this subject but she ruined it. Talked about everything personal but Anthropology. I was bored to tears. I sure can pick the losers!"

"Losy, boring teaching, slow paced-did not cover material in book only personal politics & racism. Even A students like myself failed both exams. I would of enjoyed this class if I had a different teacher who stuck to the material in the book."

"I agree I took her in the Fall 03 and she was always late. I learned nothing in ANT 100. She spoke more about poltics and race (which is an aspect of ANT but certain topics were irrelevant to the course) than anything else. What a shame otherwise Ant is very interesting."

"Didn't cover any material from the book in class so most students failed both tests. Has time mgmt problem, plays favoritism, material could have been interesting but Reid made it very boring, personalizes too much."

Not a single positive review.

So I looked her up for my school, in literature.

Some more sterling reviews (and apparently people on that site suspect her of coming to the site and making fake positive reviews of herself!):

"Most inappropriate, unprepared and horrifyingly ignorant professor. She spends 90% of the class on venting her own political views and professing in favor of conspiracy theories against the African-American population. Get a BLOG and do it there and not in class that we have to pay $800+ for! Do not take her!"

"I'm interested in this subject, but we don't cover it in class. Assignments are clear, but I feel sorry for anyone who has never done literary analysis before b/c she offers no help or explanation. Class consists of anecdotal rambling, and occasionally reading aloud from the (really great) textbook. All I've learned in here has been on my own time"

"This class has been a source of pure upset, stress and at times straight-up shock this semester. Prof has mood swings. She spent 30% of class talking about personal and religious views. Asked for cash to pay guest speaker, then revoked request when students complained to department. Asked students to make copies. Always forgetting important items."

"Condescending and disrespectful. Don't bother asking questions unless you enjoy having someone roll their eyes at you. She assigns a lot of writing (apprx. 50 pages over the course of the semester) but she doesn't even read most of it. She forces you to come see her for office hours on your own time, but god forbid the time isn't convenient for her".

"he worst prof. at [name of my school] this woman is very unhelpful gives you a rude response if you ask a question. is always late to class but expects you to be there on time extremly unorganized never keeps track of the attendance sheet took 1 mon. 2 return back your take home midterm paper. im warning you ; dont take her youll regret it big dissapointment."

Here's one that made me smile:

"she's the worst. she talks about this website in class and comes on here and rates herself. it's unbelievable that she is teaching at [name of my school]. my opinion of the school is lower because they allow her to teach there. if you take her class, you will regret it. it's a nightmare."

"I took her class a year ago and I wish I had looked at ratings. They're true. Worst professor at Hunter. Closed minded, rarely follows syllabus & when I sprained my knee I told her I missed class to go to the doctor she said I was lying even after I showed her the actual copy of the ER note from the doctor. Dropped class & lost $500. AVOID."

"Absolutely Terrible Professor... Just when I thought it couldn?t get any worse, here comes the worst professor I have ever had...self righteous and doesn?t care what students have to say, and wont answer questions without giving you a load of bull for actually asking question. Lazy, totally unorganized, and obviously hates teaching. STAY AWAY.!!!"

"Clearly the worst Professor I've ever had, and I've attended a few schools. Extremely unorganized, complaining about everything: including the high cost of Emails (the reason she doesn't respond to them). She will constantly make outrageous statements and argue that they are facts. Covers no material and yells if you ask a completely legit. ques."

"Avoid her! She is unorganized, rants about how PT faculty does not make enough $, makes you buy an $80 HUGE textbook and then doesn't even go over half of the readings in the syllabus. She can be rude/snippy at times. There are 2 papers and a weekly journal; she doesn't believe in exams/quizzes. I haven't learned anything I didn't already know!"

"Professor Reid is a very intelligent woman,i will give her that. However, she does not know how to apply the knowledge to teaching. She often imposes her beliefs into the lessons, and at times it can turn many students off.She is also extremely lazy and unorganized. In order todo well you must regurgigate all information that you can get from her"

"Why is this woman teaching? She obviously hates it! The class is not that hard but totally unpredictable. She?s unorganized, unclear and has an unspeakable attitude. She can't even file her own work! She may know what she?s talking about but who cares if she's acrimonious."

"The most unclear, indecisive, unprofessional Professor in my academic experience. She is foolish and her grading is unwarranted. I've taken my work for assessment to other Professors they disagree with her. I guarantee no student wrote the previous rating-Prof. Reid-this is for students not you!"

"WOW is the best that I can say! I am leaving this class with a wee bit more information than I started with, but I probably couldve purchased the book on my own and learned more! She is unorganized, unprepared, and very unwelcoming. you hand in "A" work and she gives "C" because you didn't indent"

"Worst teacher ever!!! She should not be allowed to abuse the title of professor. She is a disgrace to the teaching profession. Students should not be subjected to this woman's politics and so call life lessons."

"Don't waste your time or money taking this ANY class "supposely" taught by this woman. She does not teach only causes chaos. She does not follw the syllabus. She is also very opinonated."

"This woman is a classic case of toting her political beliefs to the classroom. If you're of European descent don't even bother taking her class because, as the "oppressor," you'll probably be leaving with a C if you're lucky."

One reviewers sums her up in one word:

"nightmare!"

To be fair, however, some people gave her good reviews. Though they might have been made up by the woman herself, as many think they are, since she talks about the website in class all the time.

I hate to stereotype...but...I have noted that a high number of the worst offenders when it comes to not teaching the subject but indulging in rants about their pet theories (often having nothing to do with subject of the course) are English Professors. There must be a reason for this....

I've taken A LOT of English classes; I've taught a lot of English classes. I have not had a single experience like this one.

Today she threw drops of rum on the classroom floor in prayer for the souls of Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Jacob, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and Malcolm X. Yes, threw rum on the floor.

Lord help me.

Hey, that might be worth something, there. Does the university have any policy about alcohol in the classroom?

Just a thought :D

How many students dove to the floor to lick it up?

This is one of the weirdest threads I have ever read. I'm so sorry, Eeney! This person is wasting your time and money and the time and money of so many others. :nope:

It's easier when you don't have any actual material to cover.

THIS?!?! is the weirdest thread you have ever read?
We have people come here and claim to be able to levitate, move objects with the mind, and my personal favorite, they hear voices.

More Wacky Stories from Wayside School-

She started on the recent Michael Mineo NYPD abuse case (the police officers were found not guilty despite good evidence to their guilt) and went on about how the police are in it with the media, corporations, army, CIA, federal government and all other power structures. Then started on how the former police commissioner, I think she meant Bernard Kerik, was found guilty of corruption and is now in jail and how he helped mastermind 9/11. Then babbled on about 9/11 being a "cover up" that the federal government, Giuliani and the police commissioner "covered up!" .

Apparently "they", whoever "they" may be, "covered it up" just like "they always cover it up". Also, "they", according to her, "Want us to believe that 19 Saudi Arabian men with box cutters could have snuck into the country, snuck into the airports, hijacked planes and brought down the World Trade Center! They want us to believe something like that! ".

She then added "They covered it up! Cover it up!"

She then went on to, you know, literature for a brief period of time before launching into how evil Fourth of July is, how it shouldn't be called "Independence Day", the Indians, how evil Thanksgiving is, the Mexicans, stealing land from Mexico, illegal aliens, Barack Obama and George Bush.

Like Kanye West, her talent is sounding like a babbling cretin or a mouthy 12 year old even when she is arguably correct.

I sincerely wish she posted on the JREF forum. She'd be laughed out of town if she posted any of this on the forum. How I'd love to read everything that comes out of her mouth picked apart like meat thrown into a fire ant colony.

Here's an example of what I mean by this woman sounding like, I'm sorry, an uniformed moron even when she is arguably correct and one actually pretty much agrees with what she is saying. I blush a little as I write this...

She, out of nowhere, started talking about ADD in grade school children and why she thinks it is bogus.

Imagine this with a heavy Jamaican accent (this conversation is reconstructed to the best of my recollection)-

"All these kids have ADD now? Why they have ADD? They all on Ritalin! Why they on Ritalin? Why they have ADD?"

Silence. I decide to say something sensible and informed to her poorly informed, half baked, uneducated, crass and silly over generalizations and pseudo information.

Me: "Well, they have a neurological disorder."

"They 'ave a neurological disorder cause they stuck inside school all day and they wanna talk! They wanna run around, play, go games, go on the computer! And the school make 'em learn math! They tell 'em learn the multiplication tables!"

Me: "Well, ADD is indeed often misdiagnosed and over diagnosed in children but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist and that it isn't a real problem in the children who do have it and that drugs aren't a real treatment for-"

"They 'have a 'disorder' cause they go crazy inside the 'hole day!"

Silence.

"My nephew, the school make-a him learn all the Chinese dynasties! All of them! All the kings, all the year, all these ancient Chinese dynasties! They wanne him to learn all this! And what these kids thinking about all day? What they thinking about? What they thinking about? "

Silence.

"SEX! Boyfriend and girlfriend!"

Everyone laughs uncomfortably, shifts uncomfortably or looks really confused because we all think she is still talking about grade school children. Silence.

Girl in class: "Uhm, well, that depends what age they are-"

"HIGH SCHOOL! My nephew is in high school!"

Girl in class: "Yeah, ancient China can't compete with that!"

Laughter all around.

Good grief.

Sooooo, she's an instructor opposed to education? Yay! Again, on behalf of English teachers everywhere, I'd like to assure you that most of us are not like this.

I agree that the "at least one crazy professor per degree" requirement is probably true. You fell into the "Black studies" type. Other popular ones are the "alternative history" type and the "religious nutcase" type, as we see here.

I had a political science type. Her views on political science probably weren't crazy, but everything else she said was.

She's a just plain bad teacher.

And her "explanation" for the misdiagnosis of ADD in children and teenagers is poor, facile, silly and totally off the wall. And just dumb. There are many reasons why children and teenagers are misdiagnosed with having ADD for simply being children and teenagers (particularly the boys) but that "They thinking about SEX all the time!" isn't one of them.

Well, I'm glad to hear that you’re graduating.

Congratulations.

Back in the late 70’s I had an electronics teacher who claimed he had invented a device to electronically cure and heal people. Claimed he was testing on himself for “longevity” (extending his lifespan was my take on that) and that it was under going clinical testing (I never believed that one). From the stories he would tell you would have thought he had lived for over 100 years already. When I would ask him how it worked he would just say that it sent 3 “signals” through the body. When I would ask him for more detail he would just laugh and say that he wasn’t going to give away his secret. In spite of those rather bizarre assertions he certainly knew and was quite able to teach electronics (one of the best electronic teachers I have ever had). The point of this story is that people can be both knowledgeable and able to teach effectively their subject of interest even if they might have some rather peculiar beliefs, even about that subject of interest. With some critical thinking (that you seem to have no problem with) one can take the effective information to heart and basically just shrug at the ancillary peculiarities.

Well, is he still alive? :teacher:

Don't worry, this is completely normal, it's an unwritten requirement for all undergrad students to have at least one crazy professor.
My geography prof wanted all of the humans on earth to die in order to save the planet.
You have 2 choices here:
1.) argue with the prof at every opportunity
2.) relax and enjoy the thought that it is almost over :alc:

Why does everyone else get the good professors!

"Oh yeah? I am for the complete Trantorization of Earth. Record the genetics of other species -- tag 'em and bag 'em -- and let's get on with dominating the universe."

I have no good tales of anyone, HS or college.
