Evidence for why we know the New Testament writers told the truth.

I care what a knighted respected archaeologist and former skeptic who spent 15 years digging and doing research in biblical lands (Sir William M. Ramsay) says about gospel writer Luke. If you don't, that is your right.

What's your evidence that Ramsay's views on archaeology are respected today?

Well, DOC respects him 'cuz he respects Luke, and Luke was one of the greatest historians who ever lived, according to Ramsay, who is respected by DOC......

Gday,

The issue is who claimed to have met Jesus themselves.

Actually the apostle Paul claimed to have met Jesus on the road to Damascus.

Wrong.
Haven't you READ Paul?
Paul does NOT mention the Damascus road conversion at all.
Someone ELSE wrote those stories in Acts.

All Paul says himself is that Jesus APPEARED to him - i.e. in a VISION.

"Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me."

Paul had a VISION of Jesus.
So what?
People have VISIONS of Jesus, and Buddha, and Krishna etc. to this day.
So what?

Like I said :
There are NO authentic claims to have met Jesus personally.

And Paul also wrote Jesus appeared to all the apostles and at least 500 others with over 250 still alive when he wrote it.

Paul says OTHER people had VISIONS.
So what?

Like I said :
There are NO authentic claims to have met Jesus personally.

Paul was really putting his whole ministry (where he often risked his life) on the line by putting this in writing if it wasn't true.

If WHAT wasn't true?
Paul said he had a VISION.
How could that put his life on the line?
Please explain.

And it would seem the first 14 or 15 people listed on this site met Jesus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_martyrs

Really?

Let's see who CLAIMED to have met Jesus personally :

* Saint Stephen, Protomartyr, was stoned c. 34 A.D.
We have NO writings of this person,
so NO claim to have met Jesus personally.

James the Great (Son of Zebedee) was beheaded in 44 A.D.
We have NO writings of this person,
so NO claim to have met Jesus personally.

Philip the Apostle was crucified in 54 A.D.
We have NO writings of this person,
so NO claim to have met Jesus personally.

Matthew the Evangelist killed with a halberd in 60 A.D.
Matthew did not claim to have met Jesus.

James the Just, beaten to death with a club after being crucified and stoned.
James does NOT claim to have met Jesus.

Matthias was stoned and beheaded.
We have NO writings of this person,
so NO claim to have met Jesus personally.

Saint Andrew, St. Peter's brother, was crucified.
We have NO writings of this person,
so NO claim to have met Jesus personally.

Saint Mark was dragged in the streets until his death
Mark never claimed to have met Jesus.

Saint Peter, crucified upside-down.
Peter's letters are forged.

Saint Jude was crucified.
Jude never claimed to have met Jesus.

Saint Bartholomew flayed alive and crucified.
We have NO writings of this person,
so NO claim to have met Jesus personally.

Thomas the Apostle was killed by a spear in Mylapore, Madras, India in AD 72.
Thomas never claimed to have met Jesus.

Luke the Evangelist was hanged.
Luke never claimed to have met Jesus

Simon the Zealot was crucified in 74 A.D.

Doc -
I didn't ask for CLAIMS and BELIEFS about people who met Jesus.

I asked for ACTUAL PERSONAL CLAIMS to have met Jesus personally.

And you could NOT QUOTE ONE !!!!

(You also ignored the issue of FOUR DIFFERENT TOMBS of Jesus.)

I bet he'll either ignore the whole post (quite good, by the way) or he'll pick one of the listed "martyrs" and niggle over some red herring. Or he could go for the good ol' "attack the messenger post of no value the only serves to hurt you reputation blah blah blah f'thang icky icky waaaaah!" post. He's not done one of those in a while.

Yikes! Congratulations! You and Joobz (and others) have patience/stamina/sheer-bloody-mindedness that surely has a divine source. By the time the matyrs/presidents/ramsey/number-of-posts came around for the FIFTH TIME after repeatedly being dealt with I lost the will to endure such intellectual dishonesty. I don't know what iteration we're up to, but maybe Doc should check his calender - just to make sure it's not still Feb 2. (Guess the movie reference)

One of the greatest movies of all time - Groundhog Day! If you haven't seen it in a while, give it another go. No matter what your politics, you may enjoy this commentary on the film by Jonah Goldberg.
