iPad Reactions

What i find amazing, and credit to Apple for being able to create such fanboism, but if any other company came out with a product like this, something that is searching for a market and lacking in so many obvious additions (i.e. USB and SD expansion), they would be ridiculed by the trade mags.

Instead, Apple, along with St. Steve, are put on a pedestal proclaiming some revolutionary second coming of computing.

Just amazing. The iPad is probably the most half-baked product Apple has ever released. As someone else stated earlier in the thread, it is a solution searching for a problem.

I find this puzzling.

What's wrong with Windows 7?

I underlined it for you.

Hell, I'd rather use Windows 7 in a netbook than the modified iPhone OS. Not to mention, I'd be able to use Firefox as my browser on the netbook, but I'd get stuck with Safari on the iPad.

Good for you.

This thing is not a replacement for a netbook. It does far too little compared to the netbook. And costs far more to do it.

You make the strange assumption that everyone has a netbook. They don't. This is for the vast majority of people who have a PC at home that they use for email, web, and maybe to run Quicken. Those people would like to have email/web/TV shows/book reader when they travel or go to the beach, but they don't need a laptop or netbook, and they don't want to stare at a 2 inch screen. This is perfect for them.

it does support xvid, right?
Not unless the OS/Quicktime app is pretty radically altered from the iPhone/iPod Touch. It would have to be transcoded first. I don't know if iTunes will do it as I've been using third-party products since before I bought my iPod Touch.

Again, where is the issue?

What makes a modified iPhone OS better than a full-OS like Windows 7?

Good for you.

Good for anyone.

I mean, the iPhone's been out for, what, almost 3 years? We're almost to iPhone OS 4.0? Why is it that I am unable to search a page in mobile safari?

That makes absolutely no sense.

Why is the iPad "perfect" for them when it costs more and does less?

ETA:

I mean, for comparison purposes, you can get a $499 iPad with 16gb of space. How many shows can you put on that, when a single hour-long show runs about 700mb? Why would it be better than a netbook (with a 250gb HDD) running iTunes?

Apple also launched their bookstore. That was a large portion of the presentation. I couldn't imagine trying to read a book on a netbook. I sometimes use my wife's netbook (which I do like) but I can't even look at the whole Scrabble board on facebook without reducing the screen to 75%. Reading a book on that would be an exercise in scrolling and squinting

eta: Don't know how comfortable reading on the iPad would be either. Reading on the Kindle really is as comfortable as reading good ol' regular paper but the Kindle has some drawbacks. The NY Times on it is very clumsily laid out and navigating around the newspaper is a bit of a pain. A larger screen like the iPad has seems to solve this.

And that is the only thing there is.

But that's not saying much, unless Apple's devised a way to read something on like a book on an LED without making your eyes bleed after a while.

There's a reason eBook readers like the Kindle use EInk.

How about the new games, apps still to be released, videos, newspapers, photos?
There really are some good things about the ipad that you could not get otherwise.

At $500 it is cheaper than I thought it would be but still overpriced for it's capabilities although I am sure Apple fanboys will still be buying them in droves.

You have to wonder if this is one of those products that is too high priced for those in the market for a Tablet, and those who want a lot of extra capabilities will not like the limitations, and spend a couple hundred more for a laptop instead.

That was another thing...the footage of the racing game was scary. I can't imagine how, even if you were able to get the hang of it, you'd physically be able to play something for more than five minutes. It looks like your wrists would be on fire.

New games?

Like what? A new way to play Peggle?

We'll see on the Apps, but after 1.5 years with my iPhone 3g, I've found most apps to be...underwhelming. Yet a netbook would allow ANY app, not just ones approved by Apple (who's approval process is nothing short of a joke).

As for videos....what a joke. As I said previously, you are severely limited by space. You can't use something like Hulu, either. You'd be better off with a netbook (with a widescreen) running iTunes for your videos, as you could hold way more than the iPad.

I mean, seriously, this is going to go the way of AppleTV or the Cube, unless some aspect of this thing is discovered or disclosed that will make it a must have.

I swear, Steve Jobs could take a rock, call it IRock, put a 300 buck price tag on it, and the Apple fanboys would snap it up.
