iPad Reactions

The more I think about it, this would truly be well-suited for my grandma. She had a computer for a short time, but it was ultimately too complicated for her, not to mention it was old and slow (hand-me-down) and she had to go to the other end of the house to use it. When she did use it, pretty much all she did was look at her home town obituaries and searched for the value of her old knick-knacks, and to receive email from the rest of the family.

My dad bought an Ipod touch to enable him to do that sort of thing from his recliner, but that would be way too small for my grandma to use. The iPad just might work.

While it is an untapped market, I find it unlikely that it will fit will in apples marketing strategy.

It's not an iPhone, it's not a netbook

it's an iNb'tween

I read it hasn't got flash, can it not run flash? I read elsewhere that you don't need flash for Youtube? How can this be?
(I am not a user of any mac products )

They can sell iRibbonCandy. Grandmothers love that crap.

I am just immagining the comercial.

"The I'm a Mac guy there with an old lady

"Grandma we apple has come out with the perfect new device for you, the Ipad. It is a oversized Ipod Touch especialy for your bad vision. THink of it as the Ipod large print edition."

The prefect comercial.

If I may expand on that...

Grandmother: WHAT?! WHAT DID YOU SAY?! WELL, ANYWAY, I LOST MY VIRGINITY IN A '53 DeSoto AND I'M PRETTY SURE THAT CAR HAD FLASH. WHY DOESN'T THIS DAMN THING HAVE IT.

Mac Guy: Grandma, you're yelling.

Grandmother: WHAT? YOU'RE NOT STILL DATING THAT COLORED GIRL ARE YOU?

Mac Guy: Oh god.

Apple made an app for the iPhone/iPod Touch that opens up to play YouTube videos outside the browser.

Also, YouTube is transitioning away from Flash to HTML5 which allows the use of "video tags."

Yes I think it is a matter of "need". Almost everyone in this day and age needs a phone. A mp3 player also seems like a necessity. Almost everyone needs a computer/laptop. No one needs an ipad. It is a superfluous piece of technology that is way too close to other Apple products and has way too many self imposed limitations (imo intentionally left out for the express purpose of being added later as "new features" for later models). It will sell but not nearly as well as people might think. It will in no way, shape or form come close to iphone/ipod numbers. If anything maybe this will get people and other companies interested in quality/affordable tablets.

Not true. What they need is a way to access email and a web browser. iPad has that.

Phones, pmps, and netbooks can already do that. What gap does this iPad fill exactly? The iPad is an option if you need to access email and the internet but just one in a sea of electronic devices. If you already own a device that can get on the web (which most people have at least one) what are the chances that you also "need" an iPad for that purpose?

Here is why I will buy one. I will get the $499 one. I don’t want to use it on the go. I will buy one for the house. It makes a good digital picture frame (which would cost $150ish) and when I want to quickly look something up on the internet I can. I think the iPhone web experience is a good one. Rather than opening my laptop I will often (several times a day) use my iPhone instead. The big screen clearly makes this more suitable. I will have it in my living room, hooked up to my stereo so I can use it to listen to occasional music. I assume my iPhone “Remote” app will work with it. I may occasionally use it to check me email. That’s it. I think that’s worth $499. The 3G versions do not interest me at all. I am disappointed it wasn’t the all singing and dancing version the rumors suggested.

Where this device could be amazing; I work in the healthcare field. There are many healthcare apps for the iPhone already, and most big EMR vendors have iPhone apps. But the screen is a little small. A Physician could easily round with an iPad. You hold it like a paper chart.

Could also work really well in some education environments as well.

Clearly the aim here was price. I wasn’t expecting that. But after a little reflection time this could be a far better idea than what I wanted, which was a high end gadget lovers paradise capable of video conferencing, gestures, touch sensitive back, OLED etc etc etc. But thats a very small market.

As Eddie Dane, brilliantly, summarised, you're buying it to get laid. Come on admit it, there's no shame in that!

It replaces a netbook. The big plus - you don't have to deal with Windows anymore.

I find this puzzling.

What's wrong with Windows 7?

Hell, I'd rather use Windows 7 in a netbook than the modified iPhone OS. Not to mention, I'd be able to use Firefox as my browser on the netbook, but I'd get stuck with Safari on the iPad.

This thing is not a replacement for a netbook. It does far too little compared to the netbook. And costs far more to do it.

Ick. In some of the demo videos I'm watching, they show how to create a Powerpoint presentation (whatever their version is called*) and it looks like it would be absolutely infuriating. Besides quick emails, I can't imagine how anyone could use this for any type of composition. For strictly consumption, not so bad.

I still think Grandma would like it. I could load a bunch of her favorite movies from the 30s that they would never stock at the rental place -- it does support xvid, right?

*Does anyone remember Apple Media Tool? It was a crime that didn't gain mainstream usage.
