The Vatican praises "The Simpsons"

John Astin was being interviewed on a show decades ago and mentioned that the Addams Family won an award for being a good family show.

Look! My church is cool! Isn't my church cool? They even like the Simpsons! And the Beatles!

But I would imagine they don't like Eminem and I know they don't approve of Madonna.

This of course forgives the Church for their child abuse cover ups.
Old news, but the child abuse problem by some teachers in public schools is still present day news.

ETA: Maybe if the media spent as much time on the problem as they did with the priests the problem of child abuse in public schools would also be old news.

Any fallacy experts on here? Is this a tu quoque fallacy or something else?

So we're saying that Catholic priests enjoy The Simpsons and abusing children? Given the standard of The Simpsons over the last ten years or so, I'm not sure which is worse.

Old News Is Called History... History is made everyday

This all might be history to you but those who don't remember their history are doomed to repeat it. Why should the media concentrate on any one group of perverts? You claim school abuse is more prevalent got any proof? The media isn't shy about reporting teachers boffing their students when it comes to their attention. If priests stopped raping babies the news wouldn't have anything to report about them. But you're right to the best of my knowledge the church has kept it in their pants for all of 2010 (so far). The news doesn't investigate things anymore all they do is report what they are told by police, victims or the results of court outcomes.

October 2009 - The diocese of Wilmington, Delaware filed for bankruptcy protection. It later agreed to provide documents to alleged sex abuse victims to postpone the start of about 80 civil cases. Since 2002, the Wilmington diocese has settled eight cases for an average of about $780,000 each.

CANADA - Oct 2009 - Bishop Raymond Lahey of Antigonish in Nova Scotia was charged with possession and importation of child pornography. Earlier this year, he had overseen a C$13 million ($12 million) settlement with clerical abuse victims in the Antigonish diocese in a case dating back to 1950.

MEXICO - March 2009 - Pope Benedict ordered a probe of the Legion of Christ priestly order whose founder was discovered to be a sexual molester with at least one child with a mistress. In 2006, Pope Benedict told the founder, Father Marcial Maciel, to retire to a life of "prayer and penitence." Maciel died in 2008.

-- May 2009 - The Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse issued a harrowing five-volume report that took nine years to compile. It said priests beat and raped children during decades of abuse in Catholic-run institutions.

So is the Simpsons and the Beatles. But that doesn't seem to stop you commenting on it.

And, as it was said before, it is really sad when the best you can do to defend your church is by saying, "Other people molest too!!!"

I oppose all child molesters and all institutions who defend them.

Bottom line is the problem of sexual abuse in the public schools is worse than it ever was in the Church.

It depends on what your definition of worse is. If you are looking at actual numbers, it is possible that public schools produce more victims than the RCC (although I would like to see the statistics before I believe a claim from DOC). On the other hand, if you look at the response of the RCC, then they are definitely worse than the public schools because the schools fire the offender and the RCC has a history of simply transferring the offender to another parish so he can commit more crimes. That's why the media pays more attention to the church scandal - it has nothing to do with persecution of Christians.

I think they also gave some praise to the beatles last year.

I love John Lennon's "Imagine." How can one not respect the lyrics: "imagine there's no heaven...it's easy if you try."

Any fallacy experts on here? Is this a tu quoque fallacy or something else?
It's his standard MO when anyone brings up any criticism of priest child abuse. He makes this grand claim that schools are apparently systematically covering child abuse by teachers. He then follows up by trying his best at never providing any evidence.

Who cares what the hell some monolithic backwards thinking organization thinks about pop-culture? Is this suppose to make them relevant again?

Or will it somehow make us forget that they actively encourage policies and promote lies that increase the spread of AIDS in Africa?

What is the point of this thread?

To be at the top of page one, earning DOC "fundie points" he can redeem in the after life to pimp out his cloud, put go-faster stripes on his wings, have a twelve string lyre, that kind of stuff.

No, I'm saying the problem is far worse in schools than it ever was in the priesthood

But the problem is not shouted from the rooftops by the media with regard to the teachers whereas it was during the priest scandal. And as I stated that is why I believe it is still a problem in the schools and not in the priesthood anymore.
