This is tragic:

A British man, said by his family to be mentally ill, could be executed in China in the next 24 hours.

Last week, Chinese authorities set Akmal Shaikh's execution date for 29 December, despite pleas for mercy from his relatives and the UK government.

Allegedly Shaikh thought he was travelling to China to launch a pop career that would bring world peace. Hopefully China will come to its senses.

I'm more interested in (concerned about?) how this criminal gang selected the perp as a mule. There must be a whole lot more than what is in the article cyclonic cites.

What is the evidence that he's mentally ill?

There doesn't seem to be any medical evidence, although this speaks in his defense:

Reprieve says that Shaikh was lured to China by two men who promised to help him to launch a career in pop music by recording a single that would prove a hit and usher in world peace.

A psychological report commissioned by the group says that Shaikh’s actions “were most likely influenced by some form of delusional psychosis”. Family members say that he has a lifelong history of unbalanced behaviour.

One of the key pieces of evidence in favour of the argument that Mr Shaikh is a sadly deluded figure, is a pop song he recorded called "Come Little Rabbit". Reprieve released the song in the hope that it would help convince the Chinese judiciary of his fragile mental state and halt his execution. Before he left for China, Mr Shaikh recorded the song, which he was convinced would bring peace to the world.

Among other possibly delusional moves, Mr Shaikh wrote emails to US and British officials calling himself a millionaire and a messiah. He moved to Poland several years ago, where he intended to set up an airline, which he was in no position to do. While in Warsaw, he wrote the song with a man named Carlos, who said he knew a producer in Kyrgyzstan who could help.

Mr Shaikh had no experience of singing in public before he headed to China, and campaigners say he was tricked into carrying the suitcase in Kyrgyzstan by the "producer", who was working for a criminal gang for whom he unwittingly carried drugs.

Yeah heroin can do that to you.

Heroin addicts don't have a tendancy to be drug smugglers themselves.

Could they not at least do a mental health evaluation?

This seems to suck pretty bad. Yeah, China, we get that you are all tough and strict and stuff. This guy is your weak link - get the clues you can on the others he "worked" with, and then send him home. Do not kill him unless you can show he's sane and diabolical and just playing crazy and simply must be put down.

But I suppose they think he's a "flight risk" what with the Polish airline under his belt, huh?

Oh my God, he's like a cross between Wesley Willis and Syd Barret with a Cat Stevens twist and Arabic parts (?). I suspect his dealings with heroin were more than passing, but the basic WTF still stands.

Even if he was deeply into heroin (Which I doubt, given that his behaviour seems to suggest mental instability), there is the question on whether it is acceptable to execute a heroin addict.

There is different catergories of users from once a week snorters to 6 x a day injectors, by the sound of his voice in his clip i would say he snorts it or smokes it a couple of times a day.

How did he get a british passport to travel overseas if he has mental health issues?

Why did his family not get him diagnosed earlier during his 53 year life?

His story sounds fishy.

Can you tell me how you arrived at this prediction?

Why couldn't he?

Who knows? There can be many reasons, from his wish not to go to the doctor to a family breakdown. What's the harm however, of delaying the execution in order to find out if he is mentally unstable? Based on his history (Letters proclaiming to be the messiah, meeting someone in Poland who promised to get him a recording contract in China), it seems warranted does it not?

The problem is that if he were a white Swede you would declare thermonuclear war on China.

He appears to be seriously unbalanced and the Chinese authorities haven't determined if he is mentally stable. What's the harm in delaying the execution until someone diagnoses him?

The details in these articles are very vague. Who are the "criminal gang"? Were any of them arrested? What evidence was presented at trial? What were the details of the arrest and search of the bags?

While i do support a liberal use of the Death penalty, perhaps executing drug smugglers is to extreme? And no i wouldn't care to much if he was a Swede.

Is there some sort of law in China that prohibits the execution of insane people, retards or etc. ?
