While doing some research on the life of Edgar Cayce, I came across this article claiming that his fame as a psychic was started not by him, but by his son Hugh Lynn. Here’s the link:

Now, here’s my take on this topic:
It’s disappointing to know that a son would lie about his father’s metaphysical and religious beliefs in order to capitalize this myth about Cayce’s psychic ability, despite their religious devotion. The author’s most striking point, to me, is this:
“Consequences of describing him as a psychic include...fostering a drift among his followers toward abandonment of the critical empiricism which Cayce both practiced and recommended, in favor of devotion to authority of trance utterance.”
There’s a lot to this article, but if it’s true then Edgar Cayce was never a self-proclaimed psychic. His son just carelessly or intentionally slapped that label onto his father.
Leaving aside the so called predictions that Cayce made, his supposed “contributions” to pseudoscience and other absurd things (probably invented by his son after the death of his father, if the article is true), what other sources, if any, claim that Edgar Cayce was, or wasn’t, a self-proclaimed psychic? Keep in mind that being a spiritual councilor does not qualify as having psychic abilities, at least according to what I read from the article. However, predictions, telepathy and the like do count as “psychic abilities”.
Finally, I’m well aware of the fact that this article was written by someone who holds many New Age beliefs, both trivial and absurd, so don’t bother pointing that out.
