Thanks, a much pithier explanation than what I found in a wiki article. Is your denomination anti trinitarian as well? What I was led to believe was water immersion/usage is key to baptism, but I began to get confused when I saw a number of Restoration sects being anti trinitarian.

We don't use the term "denomination".
Most people at the church that I attend believe in the Trinity. I'm not so sure that I do. The term isn't found in the Bible, but some of the concepts are (such as in Jesus' prayer from John), so the issue is considered heterodoxical.
But, yes, we immerse in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit for the remission of sins. Actually, I immersed my wife a year ago.

OK, I want to be clear here: F, S, & tHS is explicitly in the Matthew verse cited, but the Trinity isn't in the Bible? By that do you mean explicit reference to the Triune form isn't, such that whether or not God, Jesus and Holy Spirit are one and the same isn't clearly spelled out?

That's exactly right.
The nature of God as one person, or as three persons in one, or as three more or less distinct persons is what is very unclear from Scripture, and what I don't feel the need to insist on their being a well-understood answer for.

How heavily do you consider the early Church Fathers (pre-Augustine) in your various excursions into puzzling out Scripture?

I read and understand them as well as I can, but basically anything past A.D. 70 is non-authoritative. Still what they have to say can be persuasive in figuring out the original meanings.
