A 15 year old girl killed a nine year old girl to see what it was like.

Having a mature understanding of civics or contractual obligation is not the same thing as being cognizant of basic moral principles.

Basic moral principles?

Oh now there is a dangerious idea. The basic moral principle in this case would be "killing is wrong" yes? Now we know that most societies add rather a lot of sub clauses to that but thats only your first problem. Your second is the degree of wrongness. Stealing is wrong but it's generaly agreed that stealing is less serious that killing someone. So called basic moral principles get complicated fast.

You hold some someone who you don't credit the with the knowlage base in order to vote to the same standards with navigating the maze of ethics as someone who you aparently would accept voteing.

There is no possible way to know for sure if a murderer is rehabilitated. This girl is probably a psychopath and can't be anyway.

Judgements on her mental state are probably best left to the experts who have acess to far more information.

Much better to let them rot in prison for the rest of their lives in order to protect society. I am perfectly willing to pay taxes in order to keep murderers behind bars.

Then we'd better lock up the entire population (the male half anyway) to protect society. Don't know who the next workplace shooter is going to be. Life involves an element of risk.

You're right. I'm not sure where this girl fits though, her killing the 9-year old doesn't necessarily means she's clinically psycho.
IIRC, personality disorders (like socio/psychopathy) are generally not accepted diagnoses for those under 18, so clinically she cannot be psycho, by definition.

Then we'd better lock up the entire population (the male half anyway) to protect society. Don't know who the next workplace shooter is going to be.

That's a really stupid argument.

Life involves an element of risk.

No reason we can't lessen the risks where reasonably possible. Locking up murderers is certainly reasonable.

Putting words in my mouth? How about this, "killing someone for the selfish reason of wanting a thrill is wrong, or at least a 15 year old should be able to understand that society will severely punish such actions". A fifteen year old could build the moral case out of common moral concepts like the golden rule and an understanding of murder's permanence. Anyway, she should have seen enough news and media to understand that murder is a serious offense. It's not complex at all. There is no maze for this type of murder. Sure, the act of killing can be made morally complex with extenuating circumstances but, in that case, basic moral principles wouldn't apply.

I work with female detainees myself but I would never touuch one of them. Not even the pretty ones.
You're a braver man than I. One of the motivating factors in my recent career change was the fact that my prison converted to female inmates. I was already trying to land the job I now have before they announced the change, but it was just one more reason to leave, especially when I started hearing the stories from the unit officers about how many of them started crying in the office.

So glad I never actually had to interact with them before I left...

Seems to me moral understanding generally comes much earlier than fully aware voting capacity. Little Johnny is taught in his first few years not to punch little Sally, or stab Mama Jenny. Any time he acts out or does something immoral in school he's called on it. Some of this is him merely responding by rote in fear of punishment, but he is realizing what morals his society holds. And probably figuring out whether he agrees with the morals or not, and whether and when he should follow those morals as opposed to his own. It seems ridiculous that a 15-year old wouldn't have a good understanding of social morals. Just being aware of laws gives a strong indiciation of what society sees as immoral.

Voting on the other hand isn't shown to kids from a young age, it isn't until government/civics class that many get to understand the rules and gain an interest in politicians.

I don't like any age-based restrictions on anything though, and would abolish the voting age minimum entirely. Some little Johnnys or teen Johnnys mature quicker than others, or are more interested in politics or morally conscious earlier than others. And some little Sallys are bad apples from a very early age and should be punished just as adult Sallys are.

That blog has more pictures of her. You can see the cut scars on her wrist.

The blog states she's currently in a mental hospital for evaluation. I suspect she'll be found crazy. In the comments somebody also asked why she had dug two graves, was she intending to kill another/perhaps herself?

A life sentence with parole eligibility is still a life sentence. Rarely is the person released anything at all the person sentenced.... assuming the parole board is doing its job. I'm strongly opposed to the life without parole sentence, if only that releasing an old man as horrified as anyone else about the actions of the young man he used to be isn't a bad idea.

Red: There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bulls**t word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a ◊◊◊◊.

And I am surpised thatthis thread has gone 4 pages wtihout this:

When I was just a baby,
My Mama told me, "Son,
Always be a good boy,
Don't ever play with guns,"
But I shot a man in Reno,
Just to watch him die,
When I hear that whistle blowin',
I hang my head and cry.
