I'm a big fan of her assets.

Marketing is fine if it's effective; a campaign such as this does nothing to promote the idea that issues of science and/or health should be fronted by actual experts. These commercials don't do anything to counteract the anti-vaxers anyhow; they may only serve to remind some that they should keep up on some vaccines. I agree that we pointy-heads can be rather inept at speaking to a lay public but I think it's preferable, and more effective, to devise cogent communication using experts, rather than engaging in a celebrity war.And how many people are going to change channels when it;s an expert but might watch if it is J Lo?
Sorry, but you need marketing to get the word out. You might not like it but it's a fact of life.
And, frankly, the Skeptical Community is lousy at marketing. The Skeptics Guide to the Universe had a discussion about this.
And the bitter fact is some experts, though very knowledgable, are lousy at presenting their information to the public.
Why should they be fronted by experts? They shoul be backed by experts.Marketing is fine if it's effective; a campaign such as this does nothing to promote the idea that issues of science and/or health should be fronted by actual experts.
Well, J-Lo is an expert. Specifically, she's an expert on getting people to pay attention to her. This is why I know who she is but have never heard of the world's foremost expert on pertussis.I agree that we pointy-heads can be rather inept at speaking to a lay public but I think it's preferable, and more effective, to devise cogent communication using experts ...
And what happens when they decide to think for themselves? Using celebrities just lends legitimacy to their credibility as 'experts' on what they are endorsing. Why should they be fronted by experts? They shoul be backed by experts.
That is absolutely true and a damn shame.Well, J-Lo is an expert. Specifically, she's an expert on getting people to pay attention to her. This is why I know who she is but have never heard of the world's foremost expert on pertussis.
Undoubtedly, but unfortunately, marketing experts flubbed Amanda Peet's first Every Child by Two campaign by stating that U.S. pre-vaccine, annual measles mortality was 500,000. It was a wee bit embarrassing. And presumably the person who designed the ad was an expert on marketing.
And scientists wouldn't make that mistake why??????Undoubtedly, but unfortunately, marketing experts flubbed Amanda Peet's first Every Child by Two campaign by stating that U.S. pre-vaccine, annual measles mortality was 500,000. It was a wee bit embarrassing.
Because if they did, they shouldn't be speaking on the matter. And scientists wouldn't make that mistake why??????

I had Pertussis five or six years ago, and coughed my lungs out for MONTHS! I would cough so lng and so hard that I would almost pass out from lack of oxygen. Not a fun time.
Scientists are human. Humans make mistakes ergo no one can't talk about anything.Because if they did, they shouldn't be speaking on the matter.

It was text media, presumably proofread by someone other than an office lackey. Or should have been.Scientists are human. Humans make mistakes ergo no one can't talk about anything.
I have been reading your posts and you come off as a person who hates celebrities because they are a celebrity and you are not.
See above; I find it very hard to believe that an expert, e.g. Dr. Offit or Dr. Cherry, would have let that slip through proofing. It is also obvious also have no idea of marketing.
Do you have some sort of proof that it was a "marketing expert" that made the mistake regarding the Every Child by Two campaign?
Celebrity-worship... for when you can't think for yourself. Oh and super-duper strawman. I prefer my brand of time/effort/sacrifice and TALENT that it took to get me where I am thankyouverymuch.Listening to all the wannabees who look at someone like J-Lo and say to themselves "That looks easy - I can do that on TV and get the same results" is hilarious.
You obviously have no idea the amount of time/effort/sacrifice and TALENT that it takes to command such a wide audience.
Furthermore, trying to pretend that you can take anybody and make them a successful media spokesperson is dreaming in technicolor.
...Ograh...

I wonder how much she was paid to do it.
I get the impression that she'd probably say anything if she was paid enough to do it. Someone paid her to say good things about vaccines this time. It doesn't necessarily mean that she personally feels strongly about it. I agree that it's a good thing getting a famous celeb to push our cause, but unless she says the same thing in unscripted interviews, I don't think it's cause to believe that she's actually, personally, on "our side".
You are one of the weakest arguments you can make is the one your making otherwise known as the appeal to authority. The fact that people are smart doesn't mean they don't make mistakes. Its the exact same celebrity idol worship that you seem to be bashing.See above; I find it very hard to believe that an expert, e.g. Dr. Offit or Dr. Cherry, would have let that slip through proofing.
Except that the claim that there were 500K measles mortalities pre-vaccine wasn't a statement made by an authority. My point being, is that if someone like Dr. Offit or Cherry were the spokespeople, I sincerely doubt that they would have put their stamp on such an erroneous statement. Would you? Would you know enough to check facts before having them accredited to you? Simple human fallacy isn't the point here. You are one of the weakest arguments you can make is the one your making otherwise known as the appeal to authority. Fair enough.A valid point in celebrity advertising. In this case Im glad to say no though, she is involved with the charity.

Yes it is. I wouldn't be moronic enough to admit that I won't make mistakes. It is exact definition to the appeal to authority. He has a degree therefore everything he says is correct or will be correct. Also, your entire argument falls flat on its face for other reasons namely that you don't have to be an expert at a subject to check your facts.Would you? Would you know enough to check facts before having them accredited to you? Simple human fallacy isn't the point here.
OK, we aren't talking about an in promptu error spoken; this was a text campaign, that clearly wasn't fact-checked or checked by unknowledgeable people. Clearly Amanda Peet wasn't knowledgeable enough either to have caught this glaring error prior to having her name and likeness attached to it. There is no argument from authority, yours however, sounds more like an argument from celebrity. I never said that everything an expert says is patently correct so since you are keen on trying to find logical fallacies, your strawman would actually fit the bill. My contention is that it is rather futile to use celebrities to try and front what is, a very scientific matter and lends legitimacy to the notion that celebrities are authorities.Yes it is.
