Why do I put more credence on the victim's claim than the perpetrator in this case?
Her description of what happened fits with many other cases of sexual abuse. Her story hangs together.
In an attempt to plea-bargain, he admitted to drugging her and having sex with her in a situation, which is serious, he had made an attempt to reduce her ability to decide by chemical means.
What had the girl to gain? Maybe she wanted to get Polanski into trouble for something he didn't do, when he was already in trouble for what he did do.
I am not an expert, but victims of bullying often try to not show their emotions after the event if the bully is around. In many respects this is similar; so "sullen" fits with her story that she had been made to do something she didn't want to, whilst it doesn't fit with the idea that both parties had just done what they both wanted.
Remember that Angelica Huston was generally considered to be a friend of Polanski and not the girl.
