I know its only Bibles but there's something about book burning that repulses me.

It quite correctly recognizes the power of words.

The flaw in it is that they presume the words are turning you away from The Truth, when, in fact, they're turning you away from a falsehood, and almost always to another falsehood.

BS! My college library used LOC and you could never find any d**n thing. And all the fiction on a subject was thrown in there with the non-fiction and criticism.

Someone told me the other day that the KJV was the literal word of God, but the Latin Vulgate is polluted by man. Of course, this was an aside from a discussion on Creationism, but it still struck me as hilarious.

There are many more differences between books and periodicals than just the binding.

And I think there would be outrage if there was a particular article in a magazine that was targeted for censorship.

Sure, but that's kind of my point. Even if an article was targeted for censorship, by the time it is in a magazine, it is available -- burning the printed material has little effect on the idea -- it's archived, it's online, and if people are interested, they will be able to get it.

Book burning is horrible -- when it is an attack on ideas. But now, we have the communication of ideas in books, magazines, newspapers, radio, TV, the internet, CDs, DVDs, etc. If somebody grabs an author's handwritten manuscript on the way to be published, and burned that -- that's tragic.

Anything that has been published in the modern world... burning a few books may be a symbolic offense, but is hardly a serious assault on the ideas.

Bon Fire of the Inanities

If publishers play their cards right they could turn this into an annual holiday like Xmas. I mean these people are a publishers dream not only do they buy your product but they destroy it which kills the used market. Just think of how many copies of "Gay Jesus!: The Missing Years" would sell on Thomas Bowdler day! I would think it would do as well as Zombie Jesus comix or the "Mary The Technical Virgin" series.
