I don't think he "emphasized" anything--it's my understanding that the text is taken verbatim from the book of Genesis with drawings illustrating what the text describes.

Yeah, but has he used the entire text of Genesis and illustrated all of it, or just selected a few choice highlights?

He does the whole book, so it would be kind of disingenuous to call it "XXX hardcore Bible"* There's no genitalia, much less penetration. It's softcore at best (or worst, depending on point of view).


*I don't mean to imply Marduk is being disingenuous; I realize he was just giving the thread a humorous/catchy title.


Edit: Actually, I should make one correction. I believe it does show Adam and Eve's genitalia, but never in a sexual context.

The Dutch Volkskrant newspaper published eight pages from R. Crumb's Genesis last Saturday.

I must say I think it's very well done.

Religious groups should not complain, he stuck to the text.
For instance: the snake has arms and legs in paradise, before God punishes him by making him crawl on his belly for eternity.

That book is full of incest, rape, genocide and what not.
What would they expect an illustrated version to look like?

Robert Crumb is a gifted artist, but anyone who has seen the documentary on him knows he , and his entire family, are messed right up. Severely screwed up, which might have something to do with his military upbringing, or maybe genetics on one side of the family. But all the kids were screwed. One killed himself, the other is living on skid row in the same apartment for the last 20+ years.

Robert is the only "normal" one of the three, and you can see by his headless women with large breasts and butts that he has issues with women. His ex wives will tell you as much.

It has always been thought that you couldn't make a film of the bible sticking to the text as it contains so much violence and sex that it just wouldn't make it past the censors. Although the book of revelations would make a brilliant movie if done on the scale of lord of the rings. You have everything in there from Zombies to Dragons, it would be epic. I would love to read the other fiction by whoever wrote Revelations.
 
It is full of incest, rape, prostitution, hate, intolerance & murder, it is an horrific work of fiction and I am glad the religious communities are on board in getting not only this book but all other versions of this vile tale banned.

I just used Google to search for some images of his version of the Bible. From what I saw, it certainly isn't a "xxx hardcore Bible" ... at all.

Simple: There are no arguments against the main point that these images depict what the bible actually says. So the only defence is a good ad hominem attack. Bugger it turns out that there seems to be fairly little that you he say about the author himself, so it turns into an ad hominem by proxy.

The message could be clear: The author's father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate is such a wretched person that we shouldn't pay any attention to him when he points out the true and obvious ...
 
If you wanted to make the Old testament into a movie, you'd have to team up the director of Caligula with Lucasarts.

Although Mel Gibson might do a better job (Caligula was complete turkey of a movie).

Anyway, the few pictures I've seen simply illustrate the text.
What I found to be obscene was this:

Amnesty International has appealed to the state to commute the sentence on Khristian Oliver, 32, who is due to die on November 5.

He was sentenced to death in 1999 for murdering a man whose home Oliver was burgling. The victim was shot in the face and beaten with his own rifle.


It later emerged that while deciding whether he should be given the death penalty, jurors consulted the Bible. Four jury members admitted that several copies had been in the jury room and that highlighted passages were passed around.

At one point, a juror reportedly read aloud from a copy, including the passage: "And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death." ...
