After i got back from walking an elderly woman's Boston Terrier, Magoo, I began looking up dog information. The subject of "Dog consumption" came up, and while reading it, I began to rethink why America does not try to stop any of this horror.

Check out this statistic

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog#Etymology_and_related_terminology

It is estimated that 13–16 million dogs are killed and consumed in Asia every year.

I am amazed on the above. How in the hell can American citizens tolerate this kind of animal slaughtering? There is a difference between consumption of wild animals that are used as food frequently, and eating Man's bestfriend.

I am aware that, yes, different cultures around the world have their own rituals/traditions/etc, but there should be a limit when talking about humans consuming Dogs.

So you want American citizens to get up in arms about the killing of dogs in Asia? What do you suggest - an invasion? Bombing?

Apparently, dogs are used as food frequently. Just not in your particular locale.

Why?

I have a pet rabbit. Should I declare jihad against everyone who enjoys hassenpfeffer?

I just want different cultures to look at this from a sympathetic way. Millions of dogs are consumed YEARLY, yet that is acceptable to some, which boggles my mind

How many people own Pet Rabbits compared to the number people who own Dogs? Dogs have been close to man for almost fifteen thousand years, developing an unbreakable relationship, and being labeled "Man's best friend". Rabbits are not really Domestic animals, however, Dogs are.

How on earth can you not get upset and crushed over seeing this kind of abuse?

Why do you want to make a special exception for what can be eaten acceptably? Dogs are meat, dude.

I closed my eyes after that first picture. I couldn't take it. Now I'll be in a gloomy mood.

It's not a question of "acceptable." What do you suggest people do?

Missing the point. Dogs are animals, and loved pets. Rabbits are animals, and loved pets. If dog lovers are supposed to get up in arms about dogs, why shouldn't rabbit owners get angry about people eating rabbits?

Rabbits are not really Domestic animals,

Spike would disagree, especially if yogurt drops are involved. And I don't think you know what "domestic animal" means. (Hint: Livestock, including cattle, are considered "domestic.")

You have to understand that where dogs are eaten, historically, it's been the only reliable source of meat. I can't fault someone for filling their hungry belly.

Pretty much everything is "meat", I should think. Should India start a war with us over our consumption of cow while we're busy invading Asia to stop them eating poodle?? Personally I would never willingly eat a dog, no matter where in the world I might be, but I can understand how my friend may be someone else's stew. Live and let live...... or eat and let eat, maybe.

I can't see why eating the likes of pork is more acceptable. What about giving them chimp meat as a replacement. If push ever come to shove I would even eat human flesh although currently I am vegetarian.

Deja Vu. I remember this conversation, and pics, but perhaps different pics, in a different thread a couple of years ago. It got ugly. Did this occur or is my mind playing tricks on me?

Anyway, Makaya, there are a lot of people from India who would love to see us stop eating cows. So, before knocking on your neighbor's door.....

Go to a slaughterhouse sometime and watch pigs and cows and chickens get killed for meat. Right here in the U.S.

Then start calling other cultures barbaric.

One day, those of us left would tell our grandchildren "you see, WW1 was started because of a sandwich, and we wanted to make sure WW3 was started over something more stupid."

And incidentally...If I had to choose between a dog being slaughtered for food and good old-fashioned American dogfighting, I'd pick the butcher any day.

"Why do we call some (animals) "pets", and others "dinner" ? "

k.d. lang

Same goes for a horse slaughtered for food and one raced to death at the track. They pump those horses full of steroids and hormone treatment until they break legs or keel over and die. It's all perfectly legal, too. For our entertainment.

In this country guinea pigs are kept as pets (had many when I was younger). In Peru, they sell them roasted on a spit.

And here I thought this was going to be a thread about canine tuberculosis.

You mean "wild animals" like cows and pigs?

Sounds like your hypocrisy is showing.

Yes, throughout the Andes this is a culturally-important traditional food (Cui).

My ex-wife (Ecuadorean) said they would keep the animal loose in the house for a few days, and the kids would play with them as a temporary pet, and then they still ate them. I also used to see families there (this was in Quito--the capital city), keep a lamb tethered up outside for a few days before slaughtering it for a big feast. And yes, the kids would play with and pet the animal.

I don't think the line between animal-kept-solely-for-food and animal kept-solely-as-companions has always been so distinct as it is in today's industrialized world.
