Girl dies after cervical cancer vaccine

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/09/29/2699137.htm

A teenage British girl has died after receiving a cervical cancer vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline, health officials say.

The British-based drugmaker said the cause of death was as yet unknown.
The 14-year-old fell ill after she was given the Cervarix vaccination against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) at her school in Coventry, central England, as part of a national immunisation program.

She later died in hospital.

And how many millions of girls have had the exact same vaccine without dying?

Why is this news? There have been a fair number of deaths reported after receiving the HPV vaccine. Not as many as there should be, but still...

Anybody know how soon after the vaccination she fell ill? Minutes? Hours? Days?

I've done a number of post mortem examinations of dogs and cats that have died soon after vaccination, and only in one case (a cat) was there any connection to the vaccine. That was characterised by a timescale of a few minutes at most. (The vet was vaccinating the owner's other cat when the first cat, which had just been put back in the basket, was seen to have collapsed.)

Others, with timescales of hours rather than minutes, all turned out to be completely unrelated. The most recent was a dog which collapsed and died a couple of hours after a booster, which turned out to have a rare heart abnormality.

The timescale is in hours, as reported on BBC breakfast.

It's that "A teenage British girl has died after receiving a cervical cancer vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline, health officials say" that gets me annoyed.

"A teenage British girl has died after eating her breakfast made by Kellogg, health officials say"

"A teenage British girl has died after receiving a kiss on her cheek from a friend, health officials say."

"A teenage British girl has died after a ride in a car made by Ford, health officials say".

Post hoc ergo propter hoc. Had to be that wicked evil vaccine. At least she didn't die of cervical cancer.

As a long term blood donor, (sterile) needles hold no fears for me- but you never know how traumatic a vaccination- or any experience- may be for someone else. (I'm petrified on aircraft alongside wee kids happily playing).
I wonder how many people literally die of fright?

Clearly we need to know why this tragic event happened. If certain people are allergic to the vaccine , it makes sense for them to avoid it. We have to find out.

The national vaccination programme to protect against cervical cancer was today in disarray after a 14-year-old girl died shortly after receiving the Cervarix jab.
Health officials in the Midlands suspended the campaign while parents elsewhere were left confused as schools and councils took unilateral action in defiance of government guidelines.
The London borough of Havering called off the programme altogether pending safety checks by the Department of Health.
North East Lincolnshire said that it is continuing to vaccinate but one school in the county opted to postpone appointments “while they reassure parents”, the council said.

I see other schools are "giving parents time to make an informed choice, by which they doubtless mean "giving parents time to be swayed by irrational propaganda form a reactionary tabloid press"...

The problem is that it is likely, given the size of the programme, someone will die as a direct result of having the vaccination.

A swedish newspaper mentions "over 1.4 million".

They also mention "around 1000 deaths per year" (in Great Britain) due to the virus.

Thats's the same as the Times article
Cervarix guards against certain strains of the human papilloma virus, a sexually transmitted infection that causes up to 70 per cent of cervical cancer cases. In the UK, 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year and about 1,000 women die from the disease.

Britain is the only country to have picked Cervarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, for a mass public health programme, instead of Gardasil, a more expensive vaccine made by Merck that also protects against strains of HPV that cause genital warts.

The allegation might be that the UK Govt tried to save money with greater risk. Or to some, it will seem that way.

She could have choked on her lunch for all we know from the limited info available. She croaked during the lunch hour!

Like, How. They monitor people after a vaccine for 15 minutes, so it wasn't an allergic reaction or she would have gotten immediate treatment. Then let go for hours and then had lunch and died. For all we know she choked on a peanut, really. What in the vaccine can kill people after a few hours.

Precisely. So she choked on her lunch, or she could have had an underlying diabetic condition or seizure disorder and had some attack (that the antivaxxers will try to pin on the vaccine anyway). We don't know yet. The reports only say she died. That's it. And they know hours before there was the vaccine drive.

But, no matter, the media does its thing and the antivaxxers gleefully run with it. Very irresponsible but hugely typical.
