Well, there was the case of Gilles Garnier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilles_Garnier) who, in the 1500s, was convicted of being a werewolf over several murders (as well as canabailism).
Now, of course, its impossible to know whether his case contributed to a belief in werewolves by providing some sort of confirmation, or whether they just used a pre-existing belief as an explaination for his crimes (since belief in werewolves predated this case.)
