So, that's that I guess. He says principle, but I say he's just pandering to his base again... Republicans continue to needlessly insult Hispanics they will need in the future.

??? the fuuuuuuuuu

While this is yesterdays news, who the heck is that guy who will be dead after Obamas second term anyway again? :D

I've already said Obama will not win a second term.

(reconsiders what the GOP may have to run against him)

...at this point, Obama could beat 'em without running. He could hand out cigarettes to schoolchildren all day...

The people who once considered to be a political group called "GOP" would've to acknowlege that they all are still part of a grand old party - which is far away from the current state of what once was a party.

However, McCain probably appealed to his base - before he drops dead until Obama leaves office.

Because it seems rather a thin argument to say his vote is based on principle. Hispanics I know are peeved and say it appears he's voting against her for being Latina.

His vote was probably based on "Mhmm, would my party vote for her? .... Oh, I see: Nope". That has nothing to do with her origin or being "Latina" specifically.

I'd say that McCain's rejection is a perceived insult rather than an actual insult.

Isn't "is insulting to" about perception by definition?

If we say, "Jim's statement is insulting to Bob" then that means that Bob is insulted by it, regardless of the intentions. If we say, "Jim insulted Bob by saying X" then that it means Jim did it intentionally.

It's the difference between saying the statement is insulting, and Jim is insulting.

I consider myself liberalish but I don't see how rejecting her is an automatic insult to Hispanic people.

I agree (except for the "ish"). It was deeply dishonest a few years ago when Republicans played the race card by suggesting that Democrats were acting out of racism in opposing Bush-appointed judges who happened to be Hispanic. Unless there's some reason to believe this vote is based in racism, I think the same accusation is dishonest here.

As far as will it be perceived as an insult, sure, of course, yes, by some. Maybe an unwise move by the Senator from Arizona? We'll see.

Not automatic, but considering that a lot of Republican opposition to her has focussed on her "wise latina" comment (which was not part of any court ruling) and that some conservatives have called her "racist", it would indeed appear that her ethnicity is an important factor in rejecting her. It's not her experience and it's not her rulings which have been far from liberal. Shes a Catholic, so she's not likely to stray far from the right on abortion. So what's left?

Yes, I know the truth is that the GOP wants to make a show of "Standing Up to Obama", but it is virtually inevitable that they will alienate... erm... I mean, make themselves unpalatable to Hispanics. I think this is some sort of death wish on the part of the GOP.

Interestingly, our own Senatory Kay Bailey Hutchinson, who has long been considered invincible, also is voting against the nomination, and the backlash may cost her the Govornorship of Texas, which she is resigning the Senate to pursue. This vote may haunt her.

I'm curious--did McCain have anything to say about Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers?

McCain doesn't have any conservative base. He is pro comprehensive immigration reform which means that he is for amnesty.

BTW: Republicans Lindsey Graham, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Richard Lugar, and Mel Martinez voted for Sotomayor. I guess their vote was still insulting to Hispanics merely because they are Republicans?

And your opinion on the matter is authoritative because...?

Republicans continue to needlessly insult Hispanics they will need in the future.

I would find it rather more insulting to think that Hispanics necessarily and uniformly view her appointment in racial terms. It's downright condescending.

McCain statement on the nomination of Harriet Miers

I commend the President for his nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of the United States. Over the course of thirty years, Ms. Miers has accumulated vast experience as a legal practitioner, led her peers as the head of state and local bar associations, and worked tirelessly as a dedicated public servant. Her record is one of deep commitment to the law and service to our nation. If the Senate confirms Ms. Miers, she will be only the third woman to have served on the highest court of our nation. Her accomplishments demonstrate that the distinction would be well deserved. I trust that Ms. Miers will have a smooth confirmation process and receive a swift up-or-down vote in the Senate.

Yes but Mag2.0 did not say "is insulting to". He said.

Trying to insult someone is far different than a person perceiving an insult where there is none. The former makes the speaker a jerk. The latter means there is a misunderstanding.

He doesn't mention her extensive experience as a judge. I wonder why. Oh right...

He does have a base, however. To which he panders.

Wow, what a hack.

My opinion must be authoritative for some reason? Is yours?

Who said Hispanics necessarily and uniformly do anything?

The impression I get from folks I've spoken to is that McCain is voting no due to the fact that she's

1) Obama's pick
2) and she's a "wise Latina". That criticism rings through all coverage of her, and is the main talking point of GOP objection.
