Whoopi Goldberg: "Who shot the footage?!"

What's the point supposed to be behind faking the moon landing anyway? Shouldn't there be some reason for going to all that trouble?

But ... but ... it would have been bad PR if the USA had failed to put a man on the moon, right?

What I don't get about it is the sheer size of the conspiracy. The number of people involved easily exceeds those who would have had to ignore lots of new extra wiring in the WTC.

It is not not usually doubted that a rocket with people on board was started, either.

We have artefacts from the moon, documentation, knowledge about the technical used back then, some guy build a replica of the apollo guidance computer in his basement, even!

So, in fact, the entire conspiracy was *so good* that instead of faking the moon landing they could have just gone and flown to the moon anyway.

Although I don't believe the CT, I can think of one semi-legitimate reason why NASA/the US would fake it. The US landed on the moon as part of the Space Race with Russia. I'm sure, for many CTers, getting a man on the moon before Russia did is a compelling reason for NASA to fake it.

However, this falls flat when you consider that beating Russia was not the only reason to put a man on the moon, the vast number of people who would have to keep quiet about it being faked, etc., etc.

And of course, if it was a compelling enough reason to fake it, it was a compelling enough reason to actually do it.

Why would anyone not want the moon landing to be true? It's probably the most awesome thing that's happened in my lifetime. Offhand, I can think of no downside to it.

What's not to like?

Wanting something to be true is no excuse for not questioning it, right? I might want to believe in unicorns and vampires. Your argument has no meat.

( not a disbeliever in the moon landing, just not a fan of the I want it to be true, I like it argument. Is there a Latin term for that? )

If you actually look at my actual post, you'll see it was a response to The Music Teacher, who had said,

Once again, the enormous stupidity that people will succumb to simply because they don't want something to be true.

I have no idea what the motivation of the CTers is on this one, other than possibly a desire to be "in the know" on a secret, and a dislike of the government. I simply do not subscrible to the view that their motivation is "don't want it to be true".

I think it's the science behind it. It's big, hard science and for those who don't understand it, it's just easier to dismiss the whole thing.

Actual response- given the politics of the space race, the only people with a real reason to hope Apollo was fake were the Soviets- who , so far as I know, never even hinted at the possibility, either because they just weren't that dim or because they didn't believe anyone else might be.

Indeed. The Soviets would've killed to be able to say they had radar data indicating the Apollo spacecrafts never left Earth orbit, etc.

Indeed. In addition, moon rocks were shared with scientists throughout the world and not one, ever suggested they came from anyplace else other than the moon.

It's not that hard. It isn't as if they needed anything beyond Newton.

They couldn't - especially when the Soviet Union's lunar samples proved to share the same qualities.

Oh, yeah - the Soviets did have a lunar landing program, than ran concurrently with Apollo. It was, however, unmanned, which is why it didn't get as much press. It was called Luna, and consisted of several missions - amongst them the first manmade object ever to touch the moon (via crashing into it), and the first manmade object over to soft-land on another planet. Luna 15, the first Soviet mission to collect lunar soil samples, took place at the same time as Apollo 11, in fact; and the idea was for the probe to hurry up and collect a sample, then take off back for Earth before the Apollo astronauts did, thus making the USSR the "first" to bring a sample of the moon back to Earth. The mission was a failure, however; shortly after Eagle landed, Luna 15 crashed on its way down.

Later missions were not failures, though, and the Soviets were able to get their own samples of lunar soil and rock, which independently verify the American samples as authentic.

Apparently they get a bigger psychological boost thinking "they're onto something!" than they do being proud of the nation that actually put real people up there.

It's The View and Whoopi Goldberg. What did you expect?

There's a reason why women were kept in the kitchen.

I just re-watched the Mythbusters take on the moon landing, and the rippling flag was tested. The theory was that the fabric was moving because the astronauts were handling the flag as they planted it, and the residual motion of the fabric continued on its own for a while because there is no friction from air to slow it down. I'm sure, however, that no explaination will ever satisfy a crackpot.

What's the point supposed to be behind faking the moon landing anyway? Shouldn't there be some reason for going to all that trouble?

When Aldrin/Armstrong walk past the flag it doesn't move at all. If wind were causing the flag to move, then it would surely be effected by their movements.

But a lot of the problems that exist with the Moon video stem from the fact that they had to be converted for TV prior to their network broadcast.

"NASA used a scan converter to optically and electronically adapt these images to a standard U.S. broadcast TV signal. The tracking stations converted the signals and transmitted them using microwave links, Intelsat communications satellites, and AT&T analog landlines to Mission Control in Houston. By the time the images appeared on international television, they were substantially degraded."

On second thought, this type of crap really angers me because the beliefs of WG and her ignoramus brigade (the other CTs) holds serious implications. For one, WG is using national television to tell us that the American heroes Aldrin, Collins, and Armstrong may be liars, without providing any solid evidence. I think Whoopi needs ones of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOo6aHSY8hU

Don't think I didn't catch your quick edit of your previous post saying that the camera didn't leave the LM and there was no tripod...haha.

According to these folks, it didn't.

"The black and white images of Armstrong and Aldrin bounding around the moon were provided by a single small video camera aboard the lunar module."

"Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, the first men to land on the moon, plant the U.S. flag on the lunar surface. Photo was made by a 16mm movie camera inside the lunar module, shooting at one frame per second. NASA file"

I think you've actually nailed it. This is very sad. :(
