Coleman Franken Redux

This just in: the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in favor of Franken.

And not surprising, right?

Brown, what is the makeup of the Minnesota Supreme Court? Can their be accusations of political bias? (of course, as a unanimous decision, that would be silly, but hey, hasn't stopped anyone before...)

IIRC 3 of the 5 justices who ruled were originally appointed by Republicans to fill vacated seats.

They then must win election to a 6 year term.

Norm Coleman has conceded.

Just in the nick of time.

Gov. Pawlenty says he will certify Franken as the winner.

This according to the AP.

Good news. I think. I'm actually a fan of divided government, but in my humble opinion, this election showed how recounts ought to be done. I especially liked the way the Star-Tribune posted actual copies of the disputed ballots. Right wing sources tried to demonstrate bias by cherry picking questionable calls, but we could actually do our own spot checks and see that we agreed most of the time. Everything was as open as reasonably possible.

The appeal took too long, but other than that, this was a good election.

By the way Meadmaker, thanks for all the hard work and investigation that you did during this long ordeal. I read your posts with interest because I knew that they could be relied upon to be factual, even if you did have a candidate preference. You really added a lot of E in JREF.

Instead of asking "How messed up is Minnesota for electing Franken?" shouldn't one be asking, "How messed up is Norm Coleman that he couldn't even beat Al Franken?"

Assuming, for the sake of argument that Franken is obviously as bad as republicans accuse him of being...

Well, it's good to see that Coleman finally got a clue and conceded, putting an end to this fiasco.

And a special hat tip to the Minnesota Supreme Court for making their decision unanimous, so as to avoid any potential future legal wrangling :)

The decision was also written by all the justices.

Some commentators on the radio were speculating about Coleman taking another run at the governor's office, but his track record in state-wide elections isn't that impressive:

1998- Lost in Gubernatorial election to former professional wresler Jesse Ventura.

2002- Won election to the US Senate after opponent (the incumbent) died in plane crash.

2008-2009- Lost re-election to commedian and former writer for SNL.

Granted we haven't had a DFL (Democratic-Farm-Labor Party) governor since 1991. Then again the DFL is due.

Actually, Franken is intelligent and very well informed. I've read his books and listened to him frequently when he was on Air America. And I saw him in person here in Seattle.

He'll be an excellent rep.
