What I do not understand about Truthers.

Jones

I think Jones believes all the crap he spews. making money on it is just a nice bonus. He was spewing all sorts of far-far RW conspiracy nonsense back when he had a local public-access TV show and he didn't make money on it.

As for how many twoofers believe him, judging from the 9--1 "Dungeon" on the Democratic Underground, quite a few. He's cited as an authority quite often.

A social news site I frequent is chock full of Alex Jones apologists, the kind who think he's right about everything and dismiss anything to the contrary with insults, condescension, linkbombs and the occasional threat.
Actually dealing with a guy over there now who's posting just about every infowars/prisonplanet/truthnews article ever put up on the site, at the rate of 50 per hour for 2-3 hours at a time. That's in addition to the guy that's posted dozens of AJ articles a day for years now, and his other fanbois who post his trash, only not as frequently.

What I do not understand is how someone who's been a Jones groupie themselves doesn't understand why people become Jones groupies.

AJ has been fighting tyranny for years, long before he made any money. Your claims he only does it for the money (like many other threads on here) is ridiculous.

If by "fighting tyranny" you mean "batcrap loony", then we are in full agreement.

I don't think Jones would be as generous with his material if he was only in it for the money. You can find full versions of all of his films on Youtube and Google Video. His fans make copies of his DVDs and give them away. I've never heard of Jones threaten anybody for doing this.

It's much more likely that Jones is some kind of egomaniacal attention whore, who sees himself as the leader of the underground resistance that will eventually bring the NWO to its knees. From that viewpoint, it makes perfect sense that he'd allow his material to be given away: each person who hears his message is another potential fan. Jones wants attention, MUCH more than money.

Yeah. Tyrants like the local Masonic Lodge. Next Jones will open up a front against the evil tyrants of the local Bowling League.

buying his house?

Oh, lets be fair here, a $250K house isn't a rich man's house any more.

Even though I live in a $50K shack, that is because I refused to go out and stretch my income and buy anything bigger when I had the income to do so, and am glad now that I did not. I was pulling down $120K a year, and a $250K house would have been no problem.

The good news is that my diversion into a new (and low-paying) career in radio is over now, and I am looking for real engineering work again, and soon should be able to upgrade to a new pad - and maybe the bargain priced homes will still be around when I can.

It's funny how so many 911's Truers are obsessed with the man. Their desperate analytic psychobabble about him is hilarious. Does he pose some kind of threat or something? :)

Please explain what a straw man is, and how this argument qualifies as one.
I'd apologize that the discussion moved past your question, but that happens.

A "strawman argument" involves a person setting up an opponent built of all sorts of arguments that a real person would not make, then pummeling it until it falls apart into a pile of straw and old clothes. He is not arguing with a real person, with arguments and evidence, but with a scarecrow, and in a person vs scarecrow fight you can guess who wins.

People die.

Because Jones advocates violence?

He's hardly alone in defending the right to bear arms against tyranny and, judging from this forum, advocating violence isn't what gets people animated about him.

OK, so where was the straw man?

I dunno. Earlier. I was just providing a defintion.

(Why is it I can find a smilie for anything else, but most boards don't provide one for shrugging my shoulders? Are the Truthers and the NWO conspiring to make every issue black or white? ;) )

Well, I cannot answer that question mainly because I don't even know why myself.
It's because Jones speaks with such confidence. It's reassuring. Real engineers toss in a pile of qualifications because they know that nothing is absolute. Will the Sun rise tomorrow? While it has several billion days before, there is a remote possibility that something will affect the rotation of the planet. So, yeah, probably. Almost assuredly. ;)

I avoid people with all of the answers. They typically have none.
