Coleman's appeal went for oral arguments before the state Supreme Court today. The prevailing analysis is that Coleman had the weaker argument and received the harsher questioning from the judges. If he loses, will Coleman concede?

Quick Trivia: What two pro football teammates are currently serving as state supreme court justices?

Coleman lost a long time ago, but in a way he also won. His current objective is to keep Al Franken out of the Senate as long as possible through any means, however unethical, and he appears to be doing exactly that.

Of course I know Alan Page because he sits on my state's Supreme Court. And I met him at the MSP airport when I worked as a screener for TSA. Nice guy.

The other one I don't know.

Reason had a story the other day about Coleman-Franken. There was much hysteria about "ZOMG, WHAT WILL DO WITHOUT 2 SENATORS FROM MINNESOTA". Reason pointed out that it has had very little effect and recommended downsizing the Senate to 50 members to save money.

Coleman's job is to tie things up in court as long as possible. The GOP needs Franken to be out so Coleman is running interference. He knows he'll eventually lose but unitl then, he'll continue to subvert the will of the people as long as he can.

The best argument that could have been put before the court ----

"I'm Al Franken, and he's not."

Page's team mate when he was with the Bears. My dad used to call him "the Turkey."

It's not looking good for Norm Coleman...

Court skeptical of Norm Coleman's arguments
Republican Norm Coleman’s legal team on Monday faced a skeptical audience of five Minnesota Supreme Court justices, who could be his last lifeline to prevent Democrat Al Franken from being seated as the state’s junior senator.

During the one-hour proceeding, the five justices peppered Coleman attorney Joe Friedberg with pointed questions on whether the campaign had provided enough evidence to prove that Coleman would have won the election if additional absentee ballots were included.

Justice Christopher Dietzen, an appointee of Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty who is considered to be the court’s most conservative judge, said during the hearing that Coleman’s argument was filled with “legal theory” but had “no concrete evidence to back it up.” ...

... “You’ve got a state Supreme Court with more Republicans than Democrats. If there’s going to be any kind of hope for Coleman, you’d expect that to come from the Republican-appointed justices,” said election law expert Rick Hasen. “So it’s pretty notable that all three of the Republican appointees were critical of the kinds of arguments that Coleman’s camp made.”

Coleman is finished. It's only a question of how much he and the GOP wish to continue embarrassing themselves with this stupid fiasco.

When is the court expected to rule?

My guess is within two weeks. From the tenor of the justices, they were none too pleased with the arguments from Coleman's camp, so I wouldn't be surprised with a quick ruling.

The longer they strech this out, the worse the GOP is going to look to a lot of people in Minnesota.
I have a couple of cousins (my dad is from Minnesota) who voted for Coleman but are disgusted by what is going on. Better having someone you did not vote for represent your state then having no representation at all. But I guess the logic does not apply in the GOP new tactic of slash and burn warfare. Problem is they might end up being the ones slashed and burned.

Yes, it is interesting to note that current Minnesota governor Pawlenty has stated that he won't seek another term. I guess he saw the handwriting on the wall with his idiotic support of the Coleman fiasco, because I think he's essentially finished in Minnesota after this nonsense.

Of course, he has endeared himself to the more nutty right-wing elements within the national GOP, so perhaps he has ambitions to run for President in 2012. Not that he'd have a snowball's chance in hell of winning a general election...

I doubt this or the Pawlenty brouhaha will have much effect on the GOP. I think people recognize that it is an individual jerk, not a party of jerks. Of course, Coleman almost certainly is taking his orders from the national GOP who want to keep Franken's vote out of the Senate for as long as possible. Still, that's national politics. The local party is often much different from the national.

But Minnesota and other large swaths of the midwest are leaning more to the Democrats regardless of this cluster****. It is not Coleman who is wrecking the GOP's reputation. It's the GOP.

Embarrassing themselves with stupid fiascos is the primary GOP tactic these days, and Coleman appears to be a good little soldier.
Party uber alles.

This race would have been more interesting had it only been Norm McDONALD and Al Franken.

I still have bipartisan hope - I think that it should be Franken/Stein in 2012!

I would love to see Franken run for pres in 2016. That would be some funny stuff. O'Reilly would literally explode, Scanners style.

Read the book Why Not Me?. Very prophetic (he picks Lieberman as his running mate).
