Interestingly enough, was at the Pentagon last week for a couple of meetings and meeting #1 was broken up by the smell of gas in the Pentagon Conference Center. We evacuated the building and as I was standing around outside I saw someone standing next to me who looked strangely familiar. It was none other than Pentagon Policeman (now) LT William Lagasse, 2 and a half feet away from me. I wanted SO FREAKING BAD to ask "So...did you see the plane hit?" He was on the phone most of the time, coordinating the arrival of the Arlington Fire Dept to check out the smell so I never had the chance. I know I would have, after introducing myself and saying something like "I gotta ask you this one question..." I may still get a chance, if I see him again there.

That's a good point. I would guess on a tangent of the curve from where the wings were ripped off. Unlike hitting breakaway poles, losing it's wings will have an immediate and significant effect on trajectory.

I thought so as well,but I wonder how forces would alter it as there would be definitly change in forces. It would be "horzontal throw" ,but we need to determine how horizontal component is affected.

Where is the failure?

Does one or both fail catastrophically or gradually?
