So you don't want to explain why you trust the programme on one point, but ignore it on another? Okay, I'll answer for you. It's because of your double-standards: anything that supports your argument is to be swallowed wholesale, everything else is to be ignored.

Moving on, what "facts" are you referring to here? The "fact" that al Qaeda was invented post-the 1998 embassy bombings?

Unfortunately it's garbage. Al Qaeda was referred to by the State Department in a 2006 statement:

So the idea that al Fadl came up with this himself isn't "fact" at all.

How about the "fact" that "there's no evidence that bin Laden used the name al Qaeda to refer to the name of a group until after 9/11."

No evidence? Here's bin Laden:

Established "a long time ago"? You can say he's got it wrong, if you like, but the claims that there's "there's no evidence that bin Laden used the name al Qaeda to refer to the name of a group until after 9/11" is just as questionable.

Not very convincing I'm afraid.

Did you never think it strange that you had probably never heard the name of 'Al-Quaeda' until the day of 9/11 ? This global terrorist network with super-caves in Afghanistan fit for Joe-90 and the Thunderbirds ? I don't believe that the name was ever mentiond in the American media before 1998 when Bill Clinton once used the tag. That tells you how big it was.

Now we hear about Al-Quaeda's media wing and rubbish like that. It is entirely laughable. And you guys lap it up. Your grandkids....if we ever get that far...will kill themselves laughing.

You don't say why, of course, because you can't.

Here's an even earlier mention from a truther site, then "May 30, 1993: ’Al-Qaeda’ First Mentioned in International Media".

Why is this wrong, and The Power of Nightmares right?

There was possibly a rag-tag group of bandits who styled themselves 'Al-Quaeda' at some point.(see clip) The Americans would have needed something to build on.

iThe rest is nteresting but unimportant as there was virtually no further mention of 'Al-Quaeda' in the the several years between 1996 when this quotation you mention occurred and 9/11 itself. You have to ask yourelf were we really talking about the same global terrorist network with the super-caves as the Bush administration was ? (I don't know why 1993 got into your link ?....must be an error) Here's a proper link.

To bill smith, I don't know how you wound up off my Ignore list, but since we're here...

... have you read The Looming Tower? If not, then do so, and answer the following question:

1. Is it a complete and utter fabrication?

2. Or, are you completely wrong in your unsupported beliefs regarding al-Qaeda?

Thanks in advance.

In which case the Power of Nightmares claim that bin Laden didn't use this until after 9/11 is false, as is the idea that it was all based on al Fadl's testimony post-the 1998 bombings. If they've got those wrong, then what's your basis for claiming that their saying "there was no organisation" is correct?

Certainly Lawrence Wright's reference to the 1988 document where al Qaeda were founded makes them sound a little more than a "rag-tag group of bandits":

An initial estimate, within 6 months for Al-Qaida 314 brothers will be trained and ready...

And on Saturday morning, 8/20/1988, the aforementioned brothers came and started the meeting, and the military work was suggested to be divided in two parts, according to duration:

- Limited duration (known), they will go to Sada Camp, then get trained and distributed on Afghan fronts, under supervision of the military council.

- Open duration (long), they enter a testing camp and the best brothers of them are chosen, in preparation to enter Al Qaida Al Askariya (the Military Base).

The mentioned Al Qaida is basically an organized Islamic faction, its goal will be to lift the word of God, to make his religion victorious.

And here's Peter Bergen on Jason Burke saying "there is no organisation":

in his 2003 book, Al-Qaeda: Casting a Shadow of Terror, Burke is less dismissive of the idea that Al Qaeda was an organization than this soundbite suggests. Burke wrote that while the "al-Qaeda hardcore" consisted of relatively few people, "by late 2001, bin Laden and the men around him had access to huge resources, both symbolic and material, which they could use to project their power and influence internationally"--that sounds suspiciously like a "coherent organization" to me.

Al Qaeda had "access to huge resources, both symbolic and material, which they could use to project their power and influence internationally", said one of the major names behind The Power of Nightmares. I wonder why truthers don't like to quote that?

No I haven't read the 'Looming Tower'. No..I believe I am globally corect bout what Al-Quaeda really is/was.

I always wonder why people need an ignore button ? I regularly ignore people and don't need a button to do so.

So, no answer, then.

That's why we need an Ignore button. It helps me keep track of who's merely sometimes abrasive, and who is a complete waste of time. Enjoy your stay.

Make a list Al, with links to articles.

Sorry, BBC reports from the 90s are not on the Internets and you appear to be too young to have been listening to Adult news stories back in the day.

All the reports are described detail in
Ghost Wars by Steve Coll
The Terror Timeline by Thompson.

Each book is about 600 pages. We knew lots about bin Laden and AQ in that period. Both are highly recommended.

A computer search of The New York Times shows the first reference to al Qaeda and identifies at as being led by Osama bin Laden is August 28, 1998.

If you have a library card you can call that article up on a library computer. You do have an adult library card, don't you?
