Astrology Readings.

The second reading.

To Godless Dave (or whoever else you may be).

You are fundamentally a hard-working person. This may create somewhat of a dilemma feedback wise, since do hardworking persons generally consider themselves to be so or do they normally consider themselves as slackers who need to work harder?

Yes and no. Hard-working at work, not so much at home.

You work particularly hard for the wellbeing of your family.

Miss. I don't have a family to support.

You are a person of great wit, you do not say exactly what you mean, but instead you are proficient at embellishing what you say with analogies and sly jokes. However this can cause you to be misunderstood by others.

Hit.

You are also rather fickle, given to sudden changes of character which gives you power over others since they cannot predict what you will do and you can adapt yourself quickly.

Hit.

Despite the above however, you are not generally overly talkative, you talk as much as you need too. You prefer to talk within and write from the security of your own home, public speaking is not your thing.

Hit.

You also have a natural talent for singing.

BIG miss.

You tend to reveal the cold truths that nobody else likes to hear, you have little patience for the illusions and wishful thinking of others and for religious and philosophical ideas that you do not consider to have sufficient rational grounding. You do not give ground easily to those who your initially consider deluded. Your changeability does not conflict with the permanence of your ideas.

Hit. You could have easily gotten that from reading my posts on this forum.

You enjoy particularly good relationships with family members in particular your mother and/or wife.

Miss.

You emotions tend to govern your decisions as regards your career and education, you have often turned down opportunities in the past because it ‘didn’t feel right’.

The first part of the sentence is true, the second one not so much.

Others tend to perceive you as a rebellious troublemaker, you are not trusted by authority figures, perhaps because you have a tendency to tell them what they don’t want to hear.

Mostly a miss. I keep my rebellious troublemaker side well hidden.

You spend a lot of time seeking out new and radical philosophical ideas and research, ideas that upset the proverbial applecart.

Mostly a miss. I don't actively seek them out.

You also appear to have a promising career ahead of you as a philosopher, arts teacher or professor or liberal clergyman.

The latter three careers would certainly fit my personality and intellect, but I don't have plans to engage in any of them.

It also appears that despite having a sharp tongue against those whose ideas you consider to be poorly grounded in solid reality, you are emotionally comfortable with deception and illusion. You also count among your friends many whose delusional ideas you also criticise heavily.

Miss.

I never asked anything during the actual reading.

Yes, I suppose you're right. It just seemed like there was some sort of follow up process going on there where you use additional information to interpret the information that the stars were giving you. But maybe I misunderstood.

Because the individual constitutes evidence AGAINST the specific Astrological theory in question.

This is a little confusing. By "specific Astrological theory in question" you mean the specific guess you made, right? If that's the case, then it sounds like you're saying that when you make an astrological guess that turns out to be wrong, this is evidence against astrology working. But, if that's really what you meant, then it seems like we'd agree more than we do... so am I misunderstanding you?

As I put it earlier, the problem is that there is only so much ROOM for particular outcomes. That is to say, there can only be so many artists, scientists, philosophers, clergymen etc. The annoying thing is that Astrology is geared up for identifying relatively rare things.

You really think it is geared towards identifying rare things? It seems the exact opposite to me. I'm not sure what you mean by "there is only so much room for particular outcomes." If a certain star sign is supposed to become doctors, and yet not all of them have become doctors, doesn't that therefore mean there is more room for positive outcomes?

While the phenonoma which manifests itself with far above average regularity in such people, is also found in other people.

But it's hard to truly know if the phenomena manifests itself in above average regularity in such people as astrology predicts, when it manifests itself in all people, isn't it? In order to truly know this, you'd have to have a very large sample size of people. So what makes you think this is true, and do you think there's any chance that your own personal bias is causing you to see things the way you want to see them?

Well in a funny sort of a way, label like Skeptic and Woo are in themselves obstacles to actual Skepticism. Because parties tend to result in crystalisation of positions, rather than critical analysis of everything, even disbelief in evidence for paranormal phenonoma.

I agree. And not only for that reason, but simply because labels are divisive, which only hinders communication. And if I truly want to convince you of anything, it's against my purposes to antagonize you.

But to be clear, although I disagree with many peoples' here frequent use of terms like these, I do quite often agree with the substance of their arguments, and that's what really matters to me.

I went into Astrology in order to see if Astrology worked. Maybe it was the biggest mistake I ever made, but it worked so well on me and other I know and on everyone else I observed that as far as I am concerned it worked. It wasn't vague and murky, it was quite clear and it worked.

Interesting, because that's the exact opposite experience I have had. Furthermore, not only do I not think it works, I feel quite confident that I understand why astrology creates the illusion of "working," even when it does not.

No Astrologer has ever claimed to be able to pinpoint with complete accuracy and specificality anything at all. All that we can ever reveal is the general details of something. You are attacking a strawman, since no Astrologer does actuality claim to do that.

Yes, I realize that they don't. From my point of view, the reason why no astrologer claims to be able to pinpoint things with complete accuracy is because that would then make their claim falsifiable. In other words, if they claimed that the stars were always right, we'd know right away if that claim is true or false. However, like you said, they merely claim that the stars are right more often than usual. That's much harder to prove wrong because in order to do so we need a very large sample size of people.

However, I think you misunderstood me. I am not saying that all astrology guesses must be 100% accurate. The point I am trying to make is that guesses which are accurate, but not specific, do not show that astrology works. Only guesses which are accurate and specific are meaningful. I would settle for even just a 50% rate of guesses that are both specific and accurate. Do you understand why I am saying that this is important, if you want to validate your claims?

Horory Astrology come close to what you are talking about, but then the Horory Astrology KNOWS THE QUESTION! He/She knows the basic situation first and applies Astrology to the basic situation in order to get a specific answer to the question. He/She can apply specific meanings to planets, because he/she knows what 'root' those things have.

Right. So this wouldn't really be a good example of astrology "working," because from the way you are describing it, it sounds like it is the person doing the reading, not the stars.

Natal Astrology is as far as possible away from that, because of the nature of personality is not precisely quantifiable. Everyone has a bit of every sign and planet necceserily.

Right. And that makes it very hard to test if there's anything to it or not. However, you can still look at the predictions astrology makes, and ask yourself if they are meaningful predictions. If the predictions that astrology makes are mostly very general, then astrology will natural "work", but not because of the stars. I could take the predictions that astrology makes, mix them up any way I want and create my own "L-ology," and it would still work, because it's not actually the stars that is making it work, rather it is the nature of the predictions.

That is why ultimately it doesn't matter how many hits or misses I get here. Because I primerily watch people and compare them to eachother rather than asking them if their horoscopes 'fit them'.

Well, if it's not important that the horoscopes "fit people," then what exactly is the purpose of astrology, in your opinion?

Yes and no. Hard-working at work, not so much at home.

Fine with that miss. It is a bit of a stretch to go from Mars in Cancer to works hard at home.

Miss. I don't have a family to support.

If you have no family then no miss at all.

That's a basic Gemini thing. The very essence of Gemini actually.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

:D:D:D:D

BIG miss.

Are you sure? Or have you just never been interested in singing. I just noted that successful people with Mercury/Saturn conjunctions tend to be singers.

Because Saturn is control and regulation and Mercury is voice you see.

Hit. You could have easily gotten that from reading my posts on this forum.

I know. But the key thing is I could have derived that without having ever met you simply from your chart. And you know I half expect you to be someone else these days. After paximperium.

I tried to make it as Neutral as possible by not reffering specificly to any particular beliefs of yours, so that if you were another person I wouldn't fall on this basis.

Again it's a stretch to derive from Venus in Cancer good relations with mother. I like your misses Godless Dave. :):):):)

The first part of the sentence is true, the second one not so much.

I wouldn't expect you to recognise that even if it were true.

Mostly a miss. I keep my rebellious troublemaker side well hidden.

Well that would be for other people to judge. Given your name and ahem* avatar I don't see that at all.

Mostly a miss. I don't actively seek them out.

It is a bit of a stretch I suppose to go from Uranus in the 9th House to seeking out those ideas. But I still don't like that miss.

The latter three careers would certainly fit my personality and intellect, but I don't have plans to engage in any of them.

It is a bit of a stretch to go from Trine between Moon and Neptune to the above given everything else. But I wasn't going to leave it out. It runs into other stuff so I aren't overly bothered.

I was a little bit uneasy about adding that, but then I reminded myself that I wasn't actually horoscoping godless dave but his brother. :D:D:D:D

I guess that you are actually having your chart done at all suggests you cannot be emotionally (not intellectually) that averse to Neptune.

So your guessing is no more accurate than... uh... guessing. Why isn't anyone surprised?

This is my last post for today.

Yes, I suppose you're right. It just seemed like there was some sort of follow up process going on there where you use additional information to interpret the information that the stars were giving you. But maybe I misunderstood.

I was using the additional information to test my own theories.

This is a little confusing. By "specific Astrological theory in question" you mean the specific guess you made, right? If that's the case, then it sounds like you're saying that when you make an astrological guess that turns out to be wrong, this is evidence against astrology working. I mean the specific theory that I am making the guess based upon. Nothing else.

It takes a lot more than a Star Sign, but I get the principle you are talking about. The problem we always have is that people don't always have a common motive for doing the same thing, do not always manifest the conditions for doing it and finally there is a shortage of certain things inherantly.

And lastly did everyone realise they actually COULD do everything that they would like to do?

My knowledge is definately geared towards identifying rare things, I don't know if everyone elses is.

Thankfully Gunter Sachs has done just that. Got a very large sample and tested only one variable (Sun Signs).

Do I see things the way I want to see them? Probably. But doesn't everyone.

What's your Sun sign. Are you a Libra?

Interesting, because that's the exact opposite experience I have had. Furthermore, not only do I not think it works, I feel quite confident that I understand why astrology creates the illusion of "working," even when it does not.

I started with Sun Signs, decided my Sun Sign fitted me pretty much 100% and then proceeded to further research different aspects of Astrology one by one. Starting with Planets and then ending up with Aspects.

The reason I think, is that in my case the Sun is powerful overall in my chart. Anything that conjuncts Jupiter tends to be powerful, because Jupiter exaggerates things. The Sun is ego, so I tend to exaggerate myself.

A lot of people start with their Sun Signs and then decide that Astrology is bunk, the reason they may do that is because they may have very weak Suns.

Well, if lots of Astrologers get together in one place and each of them knows 100 people, then collectively they could begin to create a very large sample indeed. Astrological theories are often falsified, the claim that Leo Suns are show-offs in an obvious way is an example of a pretty much falsified claim.

What has replaced this claim is the idea that Leos have a social Sixth sense that is hyper developed and that Leos have an over-developed vulnrability/need for Social Feedback.

Some Leos become very shy because they fear negative feedback, while others become very gregarious in order to seek positive feedback.

My Mum is an example of a shy Leo. However, she didn't half complain when the vicar of a Church she no longer goes to 'failed to notice her' when he was walking down the road.

For research purposes people you don't know are fairly much useless, since unless you can observe them you are in the captive of their own self-perception of themselves and their own feedback.

As I said how specific can any claim about personality really be? If one makes a claim "you a stubborn" or "you are flexible", then what is the standard against which you are making the judgement.

The only thing you can do is observe lots of people personally, whose Astrological details and note what traits 'stick out' the most in what they say and do in each person. Or do Statistical Analysis on what people do, which is less subjective.

Every word is judged against a persons own personal standard of what is an acceptable, extreme or deficiant. And there lies the basic problem.

Right. So this wouldn't really be a good example of astrology "working," because from the way you are describing it, it sounds like it is the person doing the reading, not the stars.

The stars don't do the reading without the person. No Astrologer ever claimed they do. Each of them simply represents a basic motive or mental energy that is involved in particular things.

Take your hand and grab the nearest object. What you are getting into contact with by doing this is the energy of Mars.

Go find a beautiful object or person and look at it. What you are getting into contact with by doing this is the energy of Venus.

Based upon the location of Mars vis a vi other objects, the relationship between the various energies which make up our mental world is different. This in turn has effects upon how we act, what areas become exaggerated, what areas become neglected.

The effects are indirect, people work out their own Astrology, relating as they do with the actual Astrology at the moment all their lives, as well as non-Astrological factors.

To do Astrology, a person much emphasise at some level with the energies concerned. It's not like reading a book and reading what's in it.

However this must necceserily the case, because the same stars and planets are in the sky for everyone.

Everyone has a Neptune, even the most skeptical person on earth. Everyone has a Saturn, even the most superstitious woo on earth.

Ultimately all the different energies are competing and collaberating to increase their share of well *us*. Normally they arrive at a sort of balance, a balance which we call 'personality'. However sometimes stronger planets and signs succeed in 'squishing' weaker planets or signs, resulting in unbalanced and even utterly evil people.

Well, if it's not important that the horoscopes "fit people," then what exactly is the purpose of astrology, in your opinion?

You misunderstood my point. What I was saying is that feedback is not the be all and end all. Observation is far more crucial and ultimately crushing one way or another as evidence than feedback.

Because what you get from feedback is a persons judgement of themselves or a third party, based upon words that are being judged against a middle standard that probably isn't the same as your own.

I went into Astrology in order to see if Astrology worked. Maybe it was the biggest mistake I ever made, but it worked so well on me and other I know and on everyone else I observed that as far as I am concerned it worked. It wasn't vague and murky, it was quite clear and it worked.
This is also why Rudolf Smit became a professional astrologer. After assuming for years that it was all nonsense he finally read about his sun sign and was astonished to discover how accurate it was. Have you read his life story?:

http://www.rudolfhsmit.nl/a-pass2.htm

You really should.

This is my last post for today.

Oh, thanks for letting me know. I appreciate that.

I mean the specific theory that I am making the guess based upon. Nothing else.

What are you referring to with the word "theory"?

Thankfully Gunter Sachs has done just that. Got a very large sample and tested only one variable (Sun Signs).

Do I see things the way I want to see them? Probably. But doesn't everyone.

Not familiar with Gunter Sachs, or his study. Certainly, everyone has a bias, but the great thing about science is that biases don't matter; the results speak for themselves. If a theory predicts certain results, those results can be independently verified. So no subjective analysis is necessary.

What's your Sun sign. Are you a Libra?

Sorry, no. I promise you that if you guess correctly, I'll tell you. Since I think that personality is determined mainly by environmental influences, combined with genetic predispositions, of course I don't think that sun signs have anything to do with my personality, and if that is true then you have an exactly 1 in 12 chance of guessing, same as everyone.

I started with Sun Signs, decided my Sun Sign fitted me pretty much 100% and then proceeded to further research different aspects of Astrology one by one. Starting with Planets and then ending up with Aspects.

I see. Let me ask you a question... at the time that you started, did it ever occur to you that the reason your Sun Sign seemed fit you so well was because of the Forer effect?

The reason I think, is that in my case the Sun is powerful overall in my chart. Anything that conjuncts Jupiter tends to be powerful, because Jupiter exaggerates things. The Sun is ego, so I tend to exaggerate myself.

Most people tends to exaggerate, in one way or another. It's human nature. Do you really think that "Jupiter exaggerates things"? Then let me ask you, what does that mean to you, in other words how do you think that Jupiter relates to exaggeration? Is this something you just take on faith because in your mind, "it seems to work for me"?

A lot of people start with their Sun Signs and then decide that Astrology is bunk, the reason they may do that is because they may have very weak Suns.

I will respectfully disagree. I think the reason most people decide that it is bunk is because it seems to predict the same kinds of things you can find on fortune cookies. In other words, many people grasp the fact that vague predictions can be true for many people, and therefore aren't meaningful. This is also true for other things like psychics, but I think that in the case of horoscopes it's just slightly more obvious, and only slightly less obvious than fortune cookies.

As I said how specific can any claim about personality really be? If one makes a claim "you a stubborn" or "you are flexible", then what is the standard against which you are making the judgement.

Well that's a good point. I guess it's hard to think of very specific claims about personality that are also timeless.

Well then, if astrological predictions about personality have to be very general, I suppose that in order for them to seem real, they'd have to have a noticeably high accuracy rate. The problem with the readings you have given so far is that despite the fact that all of your predictions have been very general, there's still been a noticeable amount of misses. That seems odd to me, if astrology is truly real.

Well, I guess I have to disagree with you here. I think the subject is generally going to know themselves better than an outside observer. While it's true that sometimes people don't see themselves the way the world sees them, the outsider also has their own biases, and are always working with incomplete information.

So in general I think you should just go along with what a person says about their personality, over what your perception is. Unless you know that person *really* well.

I would be a little careful with this. I mentioned the Myers-Briggs tests earlier in this thread and there are numerous criticisms of those which would also apply to the theory SoC is trying to advance here.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with tests in general. Just to be clear, I'm not saying that a person's word about their personality is to be taken as fact. There is a certain amount of subjectivity in all that.

The best way to test this kind of thing is basically to prepare a number of different horoscopes, and have people choose the one that they think best fits them, correct? Something like that, right?

No evidence will ever satisfy you.

Well, NO evidence certainly won't do it.

But in this case, I was right.

Making statements so broad as to include most of humanity is not really useful. If that's the power of Astrology we can agree, for your sake, that it works but is completely useless.

All relatively says is something bizzare about space bending

Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't work. It explains the orbit of Mercury extremely well, and that used to be a big problem with Newtonian physics. You already knew that, of course.

something that nobody has ever observed (no problem for physics).

I'm sorry for whatever education system made you this ignorant about the world outside, but GPS sattelites wouldn't work if relativity didn't have a whole lot of truth to it. And since they work...

And then it makes a nice model which sees heavy objects as forming a sort of funnel through which smaller objects 'fall' towards the heavier object.

Everything we HAVE are models, mate. That's how we explain how things work. The point is not to have some esoteric revelation about the nature of all things but to have useful descriptions of how they work so we can understand them and use them in some way.

Of course in reality all Einstein is doing is using 'things fall' to model why 'things fall'. Without gravity, bending space would result in nothing since the objects would then remain above space, unless they were glued to space which I guess is the idea.

I deal with a number of ignoramuses on this forum so maybe I didn't tell you this lately, but please educate yourself before making silly statements like this. When I was your age I had the same thoughts about relativity. The difference is I read about it before putting my foot in my mouth here and looking like a fool who doesn't know squat.

"why does objects mass bend space".

If you're looking for "why", join a religion.

Sorry, I'm not too familiar with tests in general. Just to be clear, I'm not saying that a person's word about their personality is to be taken as fact. There is a certain amount of subjectivity in all that.

It gets even worse than simple subjectivity. There are many times people will give an answer they think the questioner wants, regardless of whether or not it's true. Another problem with testing astrology is that certain traits have been proclaimed as being representative of one sun sign or another, for example, Taurus and stubborness. How many people who consider themselves Taurus also consider themselves stubborn, even if it isn't objectively true?

The best way to test this kind of thing is basically to prepare a number of different horoscopes, and have people choose the one that they think best fits them, correct? Something like that, right?

Yes and no. The problem with associated traits crops up again. You are definitely on the right track, though. It is better to not only prepare a number of different horoscopes, but to have another person proof-read for give away hints. The cleaned-up horoscopes would then go back to the astrologer for approval of the edits. Then they would be passed onto the people. For something as informal as this forum, this type of test would work pretty well, and has been tried several times in the past. No astrologer who has attempted this here has been successful as of yet.

The other type of study that keeps getting dragged into this is the type where a very large number of people are examined for personality traits, and this is then compared to astrological events (which is basically the methodology of Gunter Sachs' study). This type has a number of problems, including possible statistical analysis errors. The main problem is that any correlation will be seen as significant, even when it may not be. For example, if you do a study of babies and which direction they were moving when they were born (assuming natural birth and not C-section), you might be able to find a correlation between something as obscure as birth direction and musical ability. Are the two correlated? Who knows?

I have yet to see any study or test of these types where the results are unambiguous and consistently replicated.

I'm curious:

If I give you sets of info (whateve info you need, birthdate/time)
And I tell you you the 4 people those info are for (but not which one matches which)

The 4 people will be QUITE different in their personalities, so if the readings are specific, it should be clear if they are for the correct people. If they are vague, it will likely be obvious they are vague when looking at all 4 together.

Could you do a reading for those 4 people?
Could you match the 4 names to the 4 sets of info (or at least the readings to gender)?

I see. Let me ask you a question... at the time that you started, did it ever occur to you that the reason your Sun Sign seemed fit you so well was because of the Forer effect?
I have a certain amount of sympathy for people who, having assumed astrology is nonsense, are surprised by how accurate a horoscope is when they first read one. Not many people are aware that over 90% of people, given any reading whatsoever but believing it to be their personal reading, will give it 4 or 5 out of 5 for accuracy, despite the fact that it is now over 60 years since Forer first demonstrated this result and it has been reproduced many times.

Many people here will be familiar with Randi's reproduction of this experiment in the Nova programme (available on YouTube I believe) but my favourite reproduction was Gauquelin's. He put an ad in a newspaper asking for volunteers' birth details, and sent each in return what he said was their personal horoscope but which was actually the horoscope of a serial killer (that was a nice touch). Again, over 90% scored it 4 or 5 out of 5 for accuracy as a description of them.

I've always felt a bit sorry for Gauquelin. His entire life, 40 years, spent trying to find scientific evidence for astrology, and all he had to show for it was a few minor statistical anomalies which no-one else was ever able to replicate. No wonder the poor bugger ended up commiting suicide. :(
