I didn't intend to watch it, and only saw clips. But, strangely, I found it compelling.

A President, our President, on a tv interview show with a huge nationwide audience. Lots of people who don't care about politics and otherwise rarely see a President speak watch that show.

And he looked great; young, strong, capable. He sounded self-assured. Obama made a good image of a leader.

Like the Fireside Chats... our President making connection with the most people possible. It was a good feeling.

What are the normal scores for Special Olympics bowling?

The funny thing would be if he were correct.

No, it was a stupid thing to say, and I get the impression that the man will apologize, and own up to it, and do something for the organization in atonement. Many will examine their own language accordingly, and that's a positive, yes?

He already has.

Like most everybody, I really like Obama. Have liked him from the beginning. Seems to me I posted something way, way back about him being the equivalent of a new JFK for America and predicting he would blow up really big - President even. I disagree with him fundamentally about the appropriate role and legitimate purposes of government.

I don't think it's a big deal either, then again, I'm not a kid in a wheelchair trying to play basketball... but as noted, he shows class, apologizes, and hopefully everyone moves on. When your the prez, public scruitiny... it's a bitch.... you just can say **** like that...

Honestly, I like that he said it. It was him being who he was without censoring himself for consumption. Would everybody be so offended if someone joked that way in casual conversation? I wouldn't. Anyone who would seriously thinks that Obama was mocking mentally retarded people is, well, retarded.

Actually, it's getting the guy who's the special olympics bowling champ his 15 minutes. He's bowled three perfect games and claims a 266 average.

Of course the number one player in the world only has a 224 average right now but should we really expect this guy to know how to fill out a score card? :duck:

He's taking a balls-out gamble, and pushing hard. Trying to get a ton of action in play for the first year. Ambitious.

He has some slack with me for a bit. His approach to some of these problems, many of which I don't fully understand, is under debate... but he's laying it out there like a man.

Other things that aren't offensive when Barack Obama says them:

"I throw like a girl."

"I drive like an asian woman."

"I hoard money like a Jew."

"I drink like an Irishman."

etc.

Don't dick up my thread, dick.
My apologies. You're absolutely right.

Honestly? I don't think the remark is actually that big a deal. Sure, it's mildy offensive, but so what?

I do, however, think it's kind of... odd. I mean, this is Barack Obama, right? He's supposed to this smart, polished, charismatic orator. He's supposed to be tapped into liberal sensitivities. He's supposed to be the champion of a "third way" of tolerance and compromise and "smart diplomacy".

I'd expect someone who habitually uses the disabled as rhetorical gambits to illustrate incompetence to make a remark like that, just like I'd expect a carpenter who cusses a lot on the job site (say, when he hits his thumb instead of the nail) to occasionally let slip some strong language at home in front of his children (say, when he drops a plate on the floor).

So, no. I don't think it's a major gaffe. I don't think it's the end of the world. I don't think it's evidence that Obama is the devil, or a socialist, or whatever. But I do think that for him to say what he said, in a friendly, relaxed interview with Jay Leno, is kind of strange.
