• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Has Christianity kept us from exploring the galaxy?

I type pretty fast, and often don't bother to spell check. If you find a place to hide from the spelling police, and a forum where they focus more on content than spelling, let me know. I think spelling arguments are silly.

I believe you mean Qing Shih-Huang Ti the first emperor of China.

It is actually the Qing Dynasty, the last Chinese Dynasty which lasted from the 17th to the early 20th century which was mostly Manchurian. It was during this time that they got more xenophobic. The Manchu dynasty suppressed the local Chinese and basically killed off any innovation. It also during this time that the Europeans powers came to China and began to dissemble it. Emperor Pu-Yi(of the Last Emperor fame) was the last Qing Emperor.

Did I mention that I have gaps in my knowledge that I sorely need to fix? :)

Thank you.

What "argument" are you talking about?

Whichever spelling derision occurs. I just don't like it. If you think my spelling is bad, wait until you meet my Grammar.

She eats, shoots, and leaves.

I jump on these forums during the few slow moments I have at work and typically only do a very quick spell and grammar check. And the human brain will often see what it thinks should be there instead of what is actually there if there is a large degree of similarity. So there’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it!

I was guessing that you had typed a common misspelling like "definately" and spellchecker had proposed the "defiantly" substitution. (If you chose "replace all" it would have "corrected" both instances, explaining the double-usage of "defiantly".) That's why I made the spellchecker comment.

There's a difference between "spelling derision" and just letting someone know they've spelled something wrong. I, personally, appreciate a correction when I've made an error, be it logical, grammatical, or spelling-ical. James Fox doesn't seem all that bent out of shape over having his misspelling pointed out. I only pointed out his error because

(a) it was repeated, so wasn't likely to be a simple typo, and
(2) I thought it mildly amusing.

I do agree that pointing out spelling or grammar errors just to make someone look bad is bad form, but, in my experience, that is not the usual reason that people point out such errors.

If anything, the modern Christian Evangelical Movement in the US and the Muslim Extreemists are doing more for hindering scientific progress by manufacturing debates over numerous scientific principles that don't mesh with bronze age fairy tales today much more than they did during the dark ages. ;)

Why do you need waste any resources? Using your resources to fight Christianity allowed about 36 million people to starve in the word in 2006. Christians, of which I am not one, spent lots of money trying to feed many of those babies.

And try to convert them at the same time.

Iron Age. Not Bronze Age. Iron Age. I figure if I correct this enough it will stick!

To be fair, the original mythology from which Christian and Muslim mythologies are derived originated during the bronze age. Hebrew writings from later than about 1200 BCE would fall within the iron age.

Oh God. Yes. Please do.

And please let us know how the Chrisitans are subverting the mission.
Several of us showed up last night, only to find that the Kepler lecture is actually TONIGHT! I fully intend to give a piece of my mind to the Christians who obviously hacked the original email and put in the wrong date to stop the progress of science. Missing this lecture may bring on the next Dark Ages.

Unfortunately I am teaching a class tonight and can't go. :bwall

CT

ETA - and the email promised free pizza. These Christians have a LOT to answer for!

alfalfafour's posting style sounds suspiciously like American's. I'm just sayin'.

Or perhaps he just totally copied it.
