Presidential Primaries 2012

John McCain to run again, after all he'll only be as old as if he'd won this time and was standing again. He couldn't, wouldn't would he? Three years is a long time in politics.

This is the case that the term "new blood" was invented for. You'd sooner to F. Thompson run again than McFail. He'll never wash off the stench of Palin.

Back in my liberal days I chortled at the prospect of Ronald Reagan running against Jimmy Carter.

The Republican field will probably not include Palin or Jindal unless Obama really seems in trouble. They're young enough to wait for 2016. Most sitting presidents win reelection. If I had to put my money on anybody for the GOP nominee in 2012 it would be Romney.

Mitt Romney will probably get the nomination, and select someone like Mitch Daniels, Tim Pawlenty, Charlie Crist, or Bobby Jindal as his running mate-all popular social/fiscal conservative governors.

But hopes for the GOP ousting Obama in 2012 are probably misplaced. They'll have a much better shot in 2016.

I'm rooting for the exorcist.

"The power of Christ COMPELS YOU to enact a fifteen percent tax cut on capital gains taxes!"

That assumes Romney is prepared to spend another bunch of his own cash. Might not be so prepared to do that again unless he thought he had a reasonable chance of winning.

True, but I think his political ambition would probably trump that.

I could see both Romney and Jindal running in 2016, when there's no incumbent.

4 years ago was Obama a viable candidate? I think those in the know considered him to green, perhaps a candidate for 2012. So there is plenty of time for a dark horse to emerge.

I expect Palin's star to fade. I have not heard how Alaska is faring since the oil bubble burst. When the government welfare rebate checks fall or (god forbid) people are asked to pay taxes to fund government services currently funded by oil revenues, the shine may come off pretty quickly.

In the end, 2012 will be seen as a referendum on Obama. Already you can see the conservatives trying to blame the recession on him. I'm sure they did the same with FDR, and he was reelected 3 times.
This. Totally this.

I'm fairly amused to notice that Ann Coulter has endorsed Ron Paul for the 2012 elections. Surely when such insanity collides with such additional insanity it causes a irreversible space-time rip somewhere in the US.

Anyway, Romney would have probably been the Republicans best pick in 2008, what with the economy and all. It is a myth that his mormonism would have alienated the evangelical base, as he had a solid lock on them throughout the primaries.

How about Chuck Hagel? Could any liberal here see themselves voting for him?

Too true. Sure, some evangelicals make noise about Mormons not being Christians (as for me: don't know, don't care), but what these kind of religious folk really can appreciate is good old moral authoritarianism. Romney has the chops. I think he's among the top 2 contenders at this point.

Hagel has really burnished his bona fides with the lefties since his opposition to Bush Wars started to make news. What you have to remember about him, though, is that on almost every other conceivable issue he's as right wingy as it gets. And he's not so dopey (ahem, Judd Gregg) as to forget that about himself. No, I'd not likely vote for Hagel.

I had already unstruck Governor Bobby when he started his not gonna take stim$ shtick. But now I'm not so sure. His last night's performance was a real bummer. Katrina is an example of how government doesn't work? Good grief. Will these guys ever find their way back to relevance?

I have a new prospect of my own for the list...

With the GOP list so packed with adherents to a losing formula, I've decided to add a rising naysayer to their errant ways. Welcome to the governor of Utah.
