It'll be 3 years until we get close to the answer that this thread asks, but we might as well get started.

GOP
S. Palin (a colossus bestrides the world)
W. "M." Romney
M. Huckabee
N. Gingrich (my perennial favorite)
B. Jindal (already says he's out)
T. Pawlenty
K. Bailey Hutchison
M. Sanford
D. Patreus
T. Ridge (abortion position update alert!!!)
J. DeMint
C. Crist (here's a hint: teh gay)
R. Paul
A. Keyes
J. Bush
R. Giuliani (notice how the crazy increases with the list)
D. Hunter (my candidate for Next Serial Retread)

Dem
B. Obama

Jindal says he's out, eh? IIRC Obama was denying rumors that he might run at this point in the last presidential election cycle. I already predicted that it'd be Petraeus if he wants it for the GOP nomination. The only question is does he want it.

Wow, the GOP is so screwed. The prospect of Jeb Bush is so real it's frightening.

Beat me to it!

Depends how popular obama is at that point. If he's still doing well expect most of the more serious candidates to sit the election out.

This is a ridiculous thread. The world will end in 2012, so it doesn't matter who will run.

Where's Fred Thompson?

Sure, he was a disaster in '08 but so was Rudy. Sure, he's old but he'll actually be a bit younger than McCain was. Sure, he's uninspiring but look at the rest of the list.

I really hope it's Palin. It couldn't be Palin, could it? The R's couldn't be that stupid/desperate, could they? (oh please oh please oh please...)

Palin/Keyes 2012. Yeah!

The GOP does seem to have a serious lack of viable candidates.
Ironically, one GOP figure who has a proven ability to get Democrats to cross party lines and has national prominence cannot run for President because he is a naturalized citizen.

They've got 4 years to find one. But the last two midterm candidates were far from inspireing so questionable how much it is a case of lack of viable candidates rather lack of viable candidates prepared to take on the even harder job of running against an incumbent.

Probably a good thing, that. Austrians entering national politics abroad never seem to work out so well... :boxedin:

You started with Palin and continued to increasing levels of crazy?

Maybe 2012 is the year for a third party...

Just making this list brings on bouts of the crazy. You shouldn't trust my judgment. Palin is the leading light of the party, and clearly motivated to move up. Rudy was a horrendous flop when he last ran. Never before has so much promise and puffery gone so utterly flat so precipitously. Rudy was pure magic on the campaign trail -- the more he campaigned in any location, the less popular he became there. That's the kind of crazy prospect of another run I'm talking about.

Palin is the crazy in a whole different way.

Now there's a fella that figured out after he got in last time that runnin' for president is just a lot more work than he was interested in. I'm pretty confident there's zero chance he'll gin up enough gumption to enter the fray.

i'm looking forward to a fresh cycle of ronulism. i'll probably regret thinking that way as 2012 approaches, though.

I sure didn't expect to be making list revisions this soon in this thread. But darned if Bobby Jindal ain't thinking about his future run. And I gotta say it, this guy is one for bold moves.

Jindal Signals Louisiana May Not Take Stimulus Money

So with that, I unstrike B. Jindal and say rotsa ruck in your run for the big prize.

If Jindal, and all the associated craziness, were to be president I would seriously consider emigration.

I can't see it now: "I said 'Thanks, but no thanks' to that free money from Washington."

Frankly I don't believe it. I think he'll take the money in the end. But I double-dog dare him not to and see if the people of Liousiana are happy about that!

4 years ago was Obama a viable candidate? I think those in the know considered him to green, perhaps a candidate for 2012. So there is plenty of time for a dark horse to emerge.

I expect Palin's star to fade. I have not heard how Alaska is faring since the oil bubble burst. When the government welfare rebate checks fall or (god forbid) people are asked to pay taxes to fund government services currently funded by oil revenues, the shine may come off pretty quickly.

In the end, 2012 will be seen as a referendum on Obama. Already you can see the conservatives trying to blame the recession on him. I'm sure they did the same with FDR, and he was reelected 3 times.
