If it was a wedding it would be like cancelling on the day before the wedding. Imperfect analagy, but Governor Paterson must be more than a little POed right now.

More accurately, she ran away from the wedding when she found out the groom was planning to marry someone else. Sort of a pre-emptive jilting.

While I hope Obama does well for the country's sake, for the next 4 to 8 years, there will be scant victories for conservatives. Watching Camelot Caroline go down in flames is indeed satisfying since she based her right to the Senate seat on the eternal flame at Arlington. Not even her support for gay marriage could resurrect this dolt in the eyes of New York liberals.

Here's what the NY Times said:

Her decision appeared to catch the governor off guard, throwing the Paterson administration into confusion and setting off conflicting news media reports. After frantic talks between the governor’s operation and Ms. Kennedy’s camp Wednesday evening, Ms. Kennedy appeared to waver on whether to withdraw, and was preparing a statement reasserting her interest in the job.

All indications are that he had already made his decision and he was going to nominate her. News reports have it that he asked her to reconsider, which is why there were conflicting reports. Now he has to scramble to reconsider.

Housekeeper and Taxes Are Said to Derail Kennedy’s Bid

ALBANY — Problems involving taxes and a household employee surfaced during the vetting of Caroline Kennedy and derailed her candidacy for the Senate, a person close to Gov. David A. Paterson said on Thursday, in an account at odds with Ms. Kennedy’s own description of her reasons for withdrawing.

The account emerged 14 hours after Ms. Kennedy announced that she was taking her name out of contention for the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton, and as Mr. Paterson, according to two well-placed Democrats told of his thinking, was leaning toward selecting Representative Kirsten E. Gillibrand, an upstate lawmaker in her second term in Congress. Mr. Paterson has scheduled a news conference at noon Friday in Albany to announce his choice.

Hard feelings toward Ms. Kennedy were clearly building among the governor’s staff on Thursday, after a dramatic evening in which she was reported to be dropping out, then wavering, then ultimately, shortly after midnight on Thursday, issuing a statement ending her candidacy.

The person close to the governor said Mr. Paterson “never had any intention of picking Kennedy” because he had come to consider her unready for the job. The person did not describe the exact nature or seriousness of the tax and household employee issues.

But other Democratic operatives and people who talked to the governor disputed that account, and said that he had all but decided to select Ms. Kennedy as senator, and that his staff was arranging a press conference for late this week.

An aide to Ms. Kennedy said Thursday that while Ms. Kennedy had not been told for certain that she was the choice, there were strong indications that she would be.

Why would anyone believe Caroline or her minions version of what actually transpired?

A Democrat operative with ties to Mr. Paterson said the governor told Ms. Kennedy last week that she was the choice, but that he would use the next few days to do “a little misdirection to keep the suspense up.”

A person close to the governor adamantly denied that assertion.

“The fiasco of the last 24 hours reinforced why the governor never intended to choose her,” the person said.

All these people, unnamed. And some of them are obviously either seriously deluded or lying.

I guess you're right. Clearly all these conflicting reports can't be true. It just seemed like the governor was caught off-guard. Maybe Caroline and others really thought she was in the running even though in fact she wasn't (and the governor was happy to let her think that and maybe even sent some hopeful signals). This would explain why so many people thought he had made up his mind to pick Kennedy. The "misdirection" IOW was in letting people think he had decided on Kennedy when he really hadn't, not the other way around.

That would surely explain Caroline's scrambling to beat Patterson to the punch and make it seem as if she was his choice before dropping out of consideration.

No matter, the prize for most unqualified is a lock for Al Franken.

Gee, I'd have thought that his stint as a radio host would have made him much better versed on the issues than the average hack. But that's just me.

In any event, Franken is clearly more qualified than the Governator. Ahhnold's only qualification was being married to a Kennedy.
