NY Times says in an unsourced ("according to a person told of her decision") article.

Says she'd been leaning in that direction, and then made up her mind when Uncle Teddy collapsed yesterday and had to be hospitalized.

OK, no need to hear about that anymore.

Now someone more qualified can get the appointment.

Like Elliot Spitzer's hooker.

So why did she put us through this, only to change her fickle mind at this moment?

I think she found her status as target a tad discomfiting. As a celebrity, she would have gotten a lot better ride if she were to run for the office instead of seeking this appointment. Should have known better.

Gotta love breaking news. I just heard on MSNBC that NBC News is reporting that a Kennedy family source is saying that Caroline has not withdrawn, and that the prior news was the result of a miscommunication between Kennedy and Gov. Paterson.

I think it would be hard for her to un-withdraw. Even if it was a "miscommunication." I can't imagine it would look good for Gov. Paterson to apoint her now.

She's clearly not good at this stuff. Rampant dilettantism.

Her odds dropped dramatically after it was reported she hadn't been paying off the local politicos. Gotta pay to play. No matter, the prize for most unqualified is a lock for Al Franken.

Please list the qualifications.

Now it's official.

“I informed Governor Paterson today that for personal reasons I am withdrawing my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” Ms. Kennedy said in a statement released by her public relations firm.

ETA:

Her decision appeared to catch the governor off guard, throwing the Paterson administration into confusion and setting off conflicting news media reports. After frantic talks between the governor’s operation and Ms. Kennedy’s camp Wednesday evening, Ms. Kennedy appeared to waver on whether to withdraw, and was preparing a statement reasserting her interest in the job. But just after midnight, she decided to make clear she was taking her name out of consideration and released the statement saying so.

Ms. Kennedy declined to be interviewed.

Maybe she was afraid of being Sarah Palined;

Wait a minute, I thought Kennedys always get what they want and answer to no one?

You know what this reminds me of? "The Runaway Bride." At the last possible moment she gets cold feet and bows out. If it was a wedding it would be like cancelling on the day before the wedding. Imperfect analagy, but Governor Paterson must be more than a little POed right now.

I'm sure he's probably very relieved. It just made his decisions worlds easier. He doesn't have to worry about pissing off any major players in the political dynasties anymore.
