Inauguration Crap

Dude...what? How many positive words can you think of that rhyme with "white"? I mean, "fight", "blight", "might", "spite", "trite"....they just don't work.

I'm white, and I wasn't perturbed in the very least. I think you read too much into his words.

That's because you've heard it so many times that whites are evil, that blacks are completely innocent and deserving of whatever benefits are bestowed upon them. You're numb to it now and they can say whatever they want to you. Go on and say it... Baaaa baaaa

I'll say to the 'old bloke' what I say to Jesse Jackson. Just because it rhymes doesn't mean it's true.

Some of the fun comments above only go to prove my long-held view that if you gave any random number of people each a suitcase containing one million dollars, there would be those who would complain about the quality of the leather.

It's a valid view, I have a friend who has worked for many years for a local radio station, and he tells me quite often about how people come in to win free prizes, etc, and many of them will complain about them.

I do think the statement was just slightly insulting towards whites in general, the implication that they do not currently "embrace what is right". But I got the impression that this was a much older little poem from the hippy era, it was a different world then.. and I don't see a reason to get vexed over the line. It's really not that big of a deal.

Thanks for the psychoanalysis, person-I've-never-met.

If you'll indulge me a moment or two to return to reality, I'll offer that I've seen just how deeply-rooted and widespread racism remains in America today. Obviously the majority has moved past it, or Obama would never have been elected. But there's still plenty of it around, everywhere.

There's things I've heard far, far more often than "whites are evil, blacks are innocent". I've come to accept the fact, for instance, that if I'm in a group of more than 4 people, and all of us are white, at least one of those other three people will be telling racist jokes, without the least amount of hesitation or conscience at some point. I was sitting in a snow plow last week, as part of a community service project; there were four people in the truck, and all of us were white. Two of them were talking about how the coming Monday was Martin Luther King Day, and thus a day off.

Person #1: "At least he was good for something."

Me: (trying to change the subject) "The next day, Tuesday, is Inauguration Day."

Person #3: "Yeah - hey, maybe next year we'll get two days off."

Person #4: "Hell, 3 more and we can have a whole week. Just line 'em all up."

Me: "..."

My best friend's father refers to Martin Luther King day as "National N*gger Day".

Being white is embarrassing sometimes, because I know that when too many other white people gather around me, someone's going to blatantly assume that I'm just all right with "n*gger" jokes because I'm white too - an assumption of the same class as the one you've made about me being "numb" to instances of racism on the part of black people.

Racism is real. It's vicious. It's everywhere. And instances of white-on-black racism are overwhelmingly more prevalent than the reverse. Indeed, the reverse is a direct effect of the former, nothing more. It lives on front porches and the backs of pickup trucks, where its purveyors insult our intelligence by coyly insisting that they're displaying their Confederate battle flag to honor some "heritage" of which they're factually ignorant and about which they truthfully don't care. It exists in the minds of those who told me, with distaste on their tongue, that I'd never qualify for public assistance after losing my job, because I'm white (something which turned out to be demonstrably untrue, of course). It dwells in the hearts of people who watched the inauguration coverage yesterday and got sick of hearing Martin Luther King's name and legacy referenced over and over, despite its painstakingly obvious pertinence to the situation at hand. When you've heard countless times, in response to a newspaper article about an NAACP meeting, phrases like "haven't we given them enough rights already?", you'll see where I'm coming from.

That's because you've heard it so many times that whites are evil, that blacks are completely innocent and deserving of whatever benefits are bestowed upon them. You're numb to it now and they can say whatever they want to you.

No sir, no. It's because I've been so saturated by white racism of the most shockingly blatant and brutal sort throughout my entire life that this one, single, fleeting, tenuously-at-best "racist" comment is like a ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ sparrow on my air traffic control radar screen.

Checkmite, I'm sure what you say is true about some whites, but there are a lot of whites who are not racist. They were not raised by parents who constantly spewed racial hatred. My wife and I have said nothing to my kids about race. When we talk to them about people who's skin color happens to be black we talk about them like they were anyone else because we would like for our kids to grow up without racial prejudices.

So my son goes starts going to kindergarten. Every thing's fine. Next year he goes to first grade, and now there's a black kid in his class who thinks it's funny to use my son as a punching bag. The teachers get involved and the boy apologizes to my son. Later on the boy comes to our house and wants to play. Playing is good and I'm hoping all is well now. So they're playing in the back yard and the boy starts swinging a hockey stick at my dog. It's a golden retriever, and the friendliest dog on the planet. So I put an end to that. I watch him like a hawk now if he comes over, and he's not allowed in the house since he's ruined some of our furniture.

Yes this is one kid. But there are many others who keep the stereotype going. Our street is pretty quiet, except for the one black family who shares their rap music for all to hear, and parks their car on their front lawn unlike anyone else in the neighborhood. My daughter has had bad experiences with another black kid. Sooner or later my kids are going to see a pattern and form opinions on what these black people are all about, and it's not about what happened 200-400 years ago. It's about what's happening right now.

If blacks want racism to end, they are going to have to show they can be just another part of this society rather than rejecting this society. They say it's their culture. They are as African as I am German, Irish or Spanish (my ancestors). This culture they have is hardly African, and I can't see why they would want to associate with a country who sold their ancestors as slaves in the first place. There are a lot of young people out there who are not racist and have not formed opinions about blacks. Right now, blacks have center stage. It's time for them to show us what they're made of. They're probably not going to change the mind of these white racists you're talking about. But they have the chance now to show the rest of us that they're just as good as anyone else.

Wow, you claim you're colorblind then relate storys which proves your racism. The kid and family are behaving in ways you don't approve. That's not a problem. The problem is you associate their behavior with their race.

I was waiting for a haircut at the barbershop yesterday (some time after a lot of the main events were over). The guy sitting in the chair asked the barber if he watched any of the "Iniggeration Day" stuff. Barber says "Nah, I don't wanna watch that ****." I just looked up in alarm but, as in dealing with woo, felt I should rein it in.

My turn in the chair and the other guy is leaving -- I was tempted to say "See ya, ya racist ****." But considering the barber was holding a very sharp cutting instrument to my head I thought better of it.

If the color of skin is not important then why is so many people celebrating about having a black president!

Alright, yes, the blacks have gone through a lot of ◊◊◊◊. No one is denying that. But if you listen to what's going on you'd think blacks are the only ones who had it bad. Here's a clip from a latino friend of mine.

All freaking day I had to listen to black people say we this and we that, and how bad they or their parents had it. I'm so sick of their victim mentality and their whining. Get over it. All I hear is excuses for why the black man don't work and sits on his ass all day. My mom who is Mexican couldn't drink at water fountains, or eat in restaurants, and the only time I ever heard her talk about it was because I asked her if Mexicans were also discriminated in those times when the blacks were. What do you expect from people in that era, whites, blacks, latinos, they were all neanderthals in the 1800's. My mom was a farm worker before she graduated from Standford univeristy and english was her second language. She picked in the fields from dawn till dusk, then went to night school to learn how to speak english, with 3 kids. She picked in the fields pregnant up until delivery. She never once complained and the only reason I know the story is because I asked about the pictures of her in the fields pregnant. The crop owners treated the farm workers like dirt, and they didn't whine about it. They formed a union and made sure there were better working conditions. It's about action. Mexicans were slaves and they freed themselves by rebelling. Black people are the biggest racists I have ever met. They separate themselves from everybody.

In your zealousness to label people you don't agree with a racist, you missed the point of what I wrote and turned it into another strawman argument. It's your fiction that I formed an opinion of the entire black race based on one black boy and one black family.

Because it is "proof" that colour of skin is no longer "important".
I'm not sure what you mean by this remark, but it sounds as if irony was intended. I think some people confuse the question of whether race is important with the observation that that very fact is indeed, very important, and worth noting. When a battle has been won, the history is not erased.

It's undeniable that for most of the history of this country, a black or mulatto candidate would not have been able to become president, no matter what his qualifications. To suggest that it is somehow racist to make note of the end of this era is, I think, an insult to those who have battled for so long for civil rights. If it is in fact true that race is no longer important, our sorry history makes that fact very important in its own right.

They will get over it. Remember, we've already forgotten the fact that George Washington was our first Caucasian president.

So there are months dedicated to white history? Fascinating. Learn something new every day.
